780 ti and 290x uber

nvidia had the discrete gpu market all to themselves. and still does.

780 and titan "were" an exclusive product. titan still "is". these gpu had zero competition. nvidia could charge whatever they want and enthusiasts can coin up whatever they want. hence the $1000 price tag and $650 price tag. and sold a bunch.

for a fair comparison. (stop blaming the 290x reference cooler already)

a 290x quiet is moderately acceptable for noise level n wattage level. this performance is edging a mild 780. (amd got nvidia to price match -:thumbsup:)

a 290x uber is a heavy factory overclock with high noise and high wattage. hence this performance beating the mild 780 and edging the mild titan.

a real comparison would be to overclock a 780 to the same noise level and wattage level as a 290x uber.

this is exactly what 780ti is.

in a capitalist society. we have to love competition.

Ummmm, Uber isnt really a heavy overclocked factory setting at all...It is a setting which allows the fan to spin up to 55%, and the allows the GPU to KEEP its clockspeed for a longer period whatever it is, as it doesnt have a base clock....
The Ti, is a little OC on a full GK110 with faster memory...

As you were....

imho. mild is keeping the fan at a moderate tolerable noise level (40dbA) and temp hovering at 80C-85C (titan 81c, 780 81c, 7970 83c, 770 80c, 680 85c) and 250 watt.

can only imagine how a 290x would perform within these parameters?

-----

since all the hype is 290x uber at 94C and noisy 50dbA drawing 290w.

waiting to see how a 780ti stacks up with high temp, loud noise and high wattage.

780Ti is

- faster
- less noise
- better cooling

AMD has always had inferior products. If you are poor, then buy 290x.

Please do not flamebait or troll on these forums. This kind of bashing and baiting is unacceptable.

Also, do not feed the trolls! Consider this a friendly warning to everyone.

You must be posting from a different dimension where reviews are published already.
Only thing inferior is the reference cooler, the board itself is a beast and a great engineering feat @28nm

It's a good engineering product. Not really a "feat" considering Nvidia has has a 500+mm2 28nm die for a long time now.

More accurate to say, that it was an engineering feat for AMD. A good one. A personal best. Which is great.
The best thing about it is it's knocking down the competitions pricing. I think that was needed.

AMD smaller die beating Nvidia's bigger one
Few months ago nobody believed AMD could turn the tables and yet they beat the mighty TITAN, i say it's a engineering marvel, just needs a proper cooler

Yes, a bigger yet not completely enabled die with a 128-bit slimmer bus. Perspective dude.
And a better cooler will certainly help, but 290W is pushing it.

Is that AMD's fault too? They could come up with a 512-bit bus and enable every core they could, how's that a negative thing?
This further proves the limitations Nvidia encountered while designing the GPU. It makes the GCN arch this much more impressive. Thanks for agreeing :)

290X is not faster than Titan, they are equally fast. 290X is a bit faster in 4K, Titan is a bit faster with SGSSAA. Obviously, the 780 Ti will be faster than the 290X on average, but I guess not by much. 5-10% maybe.

Technically they're only about equal at lower resolutions, but at higher resolutions it's a clear win to the 290x.

Even at 1600p the 290x already has around 5% on the titan.

Going to eyefinity and 4k it's winning by considerably more, enough that's it's not even very close.

Give credit where credit is due. The main thing that was special about the titan is that it offered nearly the 290x level ~8 months earlier, too bad it had such an absurd premium. The main thing that is special about the 290x is the price, and high resolutions as well as crossfire where it owns everything, again too bad the reference cooler is junky.

Nope, default vs default both cards are largely equals. In Eyefinity and 4K AMD wins by up to 7% on average depending on the settings:

People really need to stop comparing Uber mode to Nvidia default mode.

I'm not gonna be so fast to draw a conclusion on which card is faster until max oc has been done on all three, the 290x, the Titan, and the GTX 780 whether this be air or water.

Even if that was the case, AMD is this fast @ $550
Greedy Nvidia still charges $1000 for TITAN

It is the case. I agree on price, though. The 780 GHz and 780 Ti should be much better competitors when it comes to value. Titan is EOL.

box, if they're equal at default but R290x is faster @ 4K it makes R290x faster OVERALL
Hard to accept when Nvidia made you spend $1000 for performance that will cost new buyers $500 (780), $550 (290x) or even worse $699 (780ti) since 780ti will most likely beat the crap out of TITAN at much less.

Ok, so in quiet mode they might be about equal?

Either way, the computerbase link just proved my point, the 290x is around 5% faster in ubermode even at 1080p with presumably max settings. (Don't read german, the benchmarks were 5% faster)

Yeah OC vs OC is another story and will be seen once the oc models hit.

Yes, but if you enable uber mode on the 290X you should also raise the temp target on the Nvidia card(s). If you create additional thermal headroom on one card, you have to do so on the other card as well. Both cards allow this albeit by different means. Then basically nothing changes. There is no way around it: Both cards are equally fast across multiple settings.

No they aren't and you said it yourself that at regular res they're equal but at 4k the Radeon gets ahead, which makes R290x the faster card overall. Stop spreading false information and accept REALITY.

Whether you like uber mode or not you're probably not going to be able to avoid it. According to rumors NV has copied the idea in the 780 ti, so soon enough they will be on "equal" footing again if you view it as a problem.

On a side note. Personally I'd take a solid clock speed over the shifty boost speeds which you cannot enforce except via providing sufficient cooling and voltages etc, however I don't think they are coming back (unless it proves to be beneficial over the competition at some point) but that's another story of it's own.
