7770 or 6850???

Even though it's older, the 6850 overall is better. Sometimes the 7700 is faster, but more than often it is not. More importantly, the superior memory bandwidth on the 6850 actually makes it more future proof, despite the older architecture.

I just quickly brought up the newest techpowerup review:
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/GTX_650_Ti_SSC/27.html

At 1280x800, the 6850 is only 3.8% faster on average. If you cherry-picked that, I would say get the 7700 for sure. But look at 1920x1200, and the 6850 is now 12.5% faster. Games use more memory year-to-year on average, so the 7700 is unlikely to make up this gap in the future save for a new glorious 7700 driver (7700 seems better at BF3 though, if that's important to you).

I'm not sure how max OC vs max OC compares, but at stock the 6850 appears more sound except for BF3.

You are wrong.
Look at old games performance:
Crysis 1
http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/AMD/Catalyst_12.11_Performance/7.html
Here 6850 is faster by 10-15% across the board.
But it changes when you look at new games:
Crysis3
http://gamegpu.ru/action-/-fps-/-tps/crysis-3-test-gpu.html
Changing resolution and turning on AA doesn't help 6850
6850 is ageing and wider bus will not change it.
7770 uses 25% less power, which means better overclocking, quiet cooling, etc.
I want to upgrade too! But I will wait and see what next gen will have to offer.
