So I'm upgrading to a new rig and am giving this one to my brother

I have both an 7750 and a 7850
His screen is a 1080p one. I don't know how much more power the 7850 will be over the 7750 since he will likely be limited by his CPU. It also only will have 4GB of ram.

Is the only way to test it to swap the cards around?

I have a 1Gb 7770 with an E7400 @ 3.3 Ghz [with 2Gb+2Gb DDR2 Ram]. Using this configuration for almost 7-8 months now.

GPU utilization in most games is 50-70% whereas, CPU utilization is 90-100 %. [@ 1680x1050 resolution (~15% lower than 1920x1080)]

Except for Metro Last Light & Crysis 3, 7850's Gpu power would be wasted in that system.

However, if you have both these cards as spare, give him the better card as 7850 is a 2Gb card vs 7750 which is 1Gb. (Makes a difference in games like Skyrim, Total War & Crysis 3)

We need more specs, for instance, what is your PSU? Do you even have wattage and amperage for it? If not, the 7750 is one of the best cards to buy without needing a PCIe connector.

18A of 12V on each rail should be plenty

This is the PSU, not the best, might grab a EVGA 500W later

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817171013

RAM is 4GB of 667mhz
MB is ASUS P5KE
I can take the E5200 a bit higher but then I will have to run at non-stock volts

I guess I'll do this the hardware and run some testing on the cards to see how they behave at 1080p with the e5200

Yeah it sounds like you are not PSU-limited, as that is a legit PSU (Cooler Master is at least adequate if not better).

But you will be CPU-limited in most games, even at 1080p. A 7850 is a pretty strong card especially if overclocked... in fact if overclocked it is almost a GTX 580. If you really do have both to spare then give the 7850 anyway, else I would pair the CPU with the 7750 which seems like a better match.

Plenty of games will be held back by that 7850, i have matched cards like the 560ti with a e8200@ 3.2Ghz and found it incredibly bottlenecked and the 7850 is a bit better then a 560 ti but not much i think.

If he grabbed a core i3 3220+mobo and ram or something later on, a 7850 would be one hell of a match.

Guess if your games end up bottlenecked with the e5200, you could apply tons of ssaa and msaa in your games to make up for it if your gonna be limited anyways.

Sorry for the slight off-topic, but this is one of my pet hates...

GB != Gb

A gigabit (Gb) is 1/8th of a gigabyte (GB). You just said that your PC has 512MB of RAM, which I somewhat doubt, and that the 7750 has 128MB of RAM, which is definitely wrong! ;) It's not just lazy to drop the capitalization of the B- it's flat out incorrect, and confers an entirely different meaning.

I knew Gb wasn't looking right but my primary objective was to help the OP to select the Graphics card. So, didn't gave it much thought.

Just to clarify, my pc has 4094MB RAM which is 4 Giga in Bytes.

Sorry for mis-typing Gb instead of GB.

nobody spells gigabyte GB; the current abbreviation is Gb, while gigabit is Gbit or GBit.

Everyone spells it GB, because that is the correct spelling.

Just take a look at what a phone company promises for your internet- it is always quoted in Mb/s. Why? Because they get a number 8 times larger than it would have been if they had quoted it in MB/s.

q6600 can be found for as low as $50 but usually around $80. Considering we wouldn't know what sort of abuse these chips went through, especially considering how they were preferred for overclocking and are several years old now, I would not want to purchase one unless I knew exactly where it came from and how it was used for more than $50.

As the price closes in on $80 you would be better served selling the cpu+mb+ram+7750 and buying an i3+mb+ram and coupling that with the 7850. And if not overclocking you could get an i5+mb+ram for under $250 minus whatever you sold the old system for. Looking at prices for what you listed it could be a $50 upgrade to the i5.

I'm going to mod the mb to run a Xeon LGA 771 which I can grab for about $30. If it doesn't work its still only $30 I guess. Its worth a shot

Yeah, if its going to cost me $80, I would probably save up. I'm going to re purpose the e5200 into a different machine and a friend may have some DDR2 I can use for that.

yes, Bytes and bits, B and b.

it's an interesting solution, great if you can make it work but, a q6600 or 775 Xeon (like x3220) are almost the same price, it's a much safer solution.
