775 or 754???

🙂Theoretical question here...

would a 775 system running dual channel ddr2 533

be faster (gaming is a consideration)

than a 754 system running ddr 400 in s. channel?
(both system w/ 64 bit budget cpus)

also what about heat / noise considerations?

and what about the upgrade question , some 754 mb say they will hold athlon x2 chip?

It all depends...
A 3.8ghz P4 S775 would crush a Sempron...
The high latencies on DDR2-533 RAM just negate the higher bandwidth anyways, so it won't really make much of a difference.
In general, S775 CPU's are a lot hotter than S754 CPU's.
And S754 won't fit an Athlon X2.
Why not go S939...

🙂Thanks

Im in canada and a 939 proc is $130 more (semp64 is only $70)
754 + mb = 195

939 + mb = 315

both boards offer pci- ex and ati xpress video (im a budget gamer)

definitely go with s939 if your a gamer.
comparing a 3.8ghz p4 and sempron isn't exactly saying much... their not even in the same class of cpus. a budget cpu vs a pretty high end intel cpu.
heat and noise: intels are hotter than their amd counterparts.

Yeah, the sempron isn't the only 754 chip. 2800-3700 i believe...up to 2.4ghz. So there are still some options for 754.(still worth it if saving money too, unless you plan on dual core soon)

Other than that. Socket 939.

775 currently has nothing going for it. The question is 754 or 939 and single or dual core, and ita all about budget. What is the budget ?

Wasn't there a review about an overclocked 754 sempron doing something like 2.6ghz and being comparable to the 3400? IMO, go semp and oc the crap out of it.

I dont think Dual-Core's are going to fall in price very fast. The 3800+ X2 (basically dual 3200+'s) isn't that expensive if you want dual core. But if you want to get good value, buy a S939 3000+ now, and use it until you can afford to get an X2.

Otherwise, wait until next year when AMD switch over to their "M2" sockets with DDR2/DDR3 RAM...

RoD

so basically spend $130 cad more now

and in two years buy a dual core proc?

wouldnt it be more feasible to buy a new cpu + mb in two years for ..$200?

You were comparing a Sempron (value chip) to an Athlon 64 (high end chip). Don't get a Sempron. S754 is pretty much completely outdated. Go S939 and an A64 3000+. Get a board that'll let you accheive a pretty nice overclock (EPoX 9nPA+ Ultra).

Does it totally matter that they are outdated? Not like the newest games or anything really needs a 939 board/cpu, heck you can probably get by with an XP 2600 for most everything, if not everything. My simple 2800 A64 does well in everything I do, pprobably would get spanked by an OC'd2600 anyways though. IMO, just get whats economical, 130$ is 130$ is 130$, you could buy 3 weeks groceris with that.

If you don't go with a Sempron, there are fast 754 pin cpus like the 3400+ or 3700+ clawhammer, but they are still a bit pricey so I would prob suggest going with the 939 and a 3000+ and overclock it.

I would stay away from the dual core Intels tho cause they are pretty darn hot (unless you need a space heater). It really depends on what you want to do for the upgrade after this one though.
