$771K per athlete was the cost of the olympics!!

i agree, no matter how much we all may have enjoyed the festivities, that's money that would have much better been put towards helping feed the starving and cure the sick... it's just like all professional sports though, a giant waste of money.

Could you provide a link to a reputable source? I refuse to believe they would spend that much money... if they really did, I agree that the Olympics have simply been a waste of money.

but keep in mind that money was largely made back through broadcasting rights (commercials) and increased tax revenue in SLC.

<< How much did the Olympics make? >>

Thats what I'm wondering also. It also brings probably an untrackable amoutn of revenue through airline ticket sales, international recognition, commercials, sponsorships, etc etc.

Yep. There's gotta be a reason that Jiang Zemin would suck a male camel's d*ck to get the games in Beijing

Lol, some people seem to think the Olympics don't bring the host city any money!

Haha, why do you think there is such fierce competition? Because cicties are just dying to spend all that money on 15 days of sprots, or because it will bring billions of dollars in profit?

I also thought it was funny how there were more armed forces and military personnel (all federal government agencies are lumped into this category) guarding the olympics then there are in Afganistan.

The next Olympics are in Greece.

There was not one incident of terror in SLC. (save for the drunk crowd who could not make their way to the band, hardly a terror scare)

You mark my words, there will be some fanatic in Athens who will blow sh|t up...

I enjoyed the games though!

It's not funny. With all the important world officials that may have been present at the awards, nothing can happen with the world the way it is now. Plus, the US does not want to be the country to allow a terrorist attack to occur at an Olympic games, after what happened at Atlanta.

Hmmmm that is true... I forgot about all the diplomats present... Not that athletes lives are worth less...

Oh, another thing, wat happens to all the buildings and stuff when they are done with the olympics? Do they get to use them how they see fit? (the city?)

And you forgot a BOMB exploded in Atlanta Olympics not too long ago.

As I said, in Salt Lake City! I did not say Atlanta! Can you not read?

The money was not spent to benefit the athletes, it was spent so Salt Lake City could show off their city and the state of Utah.

It probably well did cost that much per athlete, I find that figure highly believable if you count construction of all the facilities and costs of all the security. Of course all that creative math doesn't help one bit if you don't total gross REVENUE as well and then decide if the games paid for themselves. I can say (there have been no tax increases in SLC) that the games were more than likely breakeven at the worst. Between broadcast rights and corporate sponsorships things get paid for.

Why is it a waste, because you didn't enjoy it? I enjoyed it and so did many other people, although I agree that the cost is a bit steep. You do have to realize that a ton of money is also gleened from the olympics so it's really just a case of it taking money to make money.
