Hello guys. I'm planning to upgrade my video card and your assistance is required. Right now I have HIS 7850 2GB. It's ok, runs well games, but I'm looking to max out GTA 5, Far Cry 4, Alien, DOOM 4 beta and other interesting projects coming in autumn-2015. So I need a powerful card for 2015 projects. I was looking for GTX 770, Radeon 280X or 290. I need your help to choose what fits me. My resolution is 1980 x 1200. CPU i5 3470. Radeon 290 seems to be the most powerful. But it's more expensive, and in some tests I've seen it's on the same level with 770 or the difference is not big. What do you think? Thanks for your time and suggestions.
 
Because new cards will be out by then to give you better performance for your $. So unless you need it for TODAY games. Then wait.
 
I don't think there will be a big performance leap, 5-10%? But more expensive.

No way, next generation Maxwell and AMD cards will give 50-60% more performance if not more. 770/280X are 2.5 year old chips essentially. Think about the jump from 560Ti to 680 and from 580 to 780Ti. Those are massive increases. Maxwell provides 2X the performance/watt which means a 770 successor (GM204) should be faster than 780Ti.

There is no point at all upgrading for future games since GPUs get faster at similar price /or cheaper for similar performance level. 770 and esp. 290 will depreciate a lot more by Fall 2015 than the depreciation on 7850 in that same time period.

The other problem with 770 is that the only viable option are 4GB cards which cost $350+. Think about how much faster a $400 Next gen GPU will be by fall 2015.

Also don't forget games get delayed, especially modern titles which face consistent delays.

New GPUs from Nv and AMD are expected by Q4 2014 and Q2 2015, well before fall 2015.

If you want to max out unreleased games you should wait for the next gen of graphics cards. Maxwell is being released this fall supposedly, and if your current card is doing things fairly well at this point I wouldn't spend money as of yet. If you have money to spend, I would suggest perhaps a better CPU or SSD in the interim, but that's just me.
 
No need to wait.R9 290 is best choice for u.R9 290 is awesome card and will run game of 2015 or beyond easily with high or max setting at 1080p
 
Thanks for advice. To note, in the first message I was talking about autumn 2014, because those games are planned for this year. I agree that buying videocard right now for games planned in Q4 2015 is pointless. So I'm buying for projects in the near future. Of course I would like to max out games that will be in 2015. But if you say that Maxwell will give much more, perhaps I should wait a little bit.
 
It's always the most sensible thing to try you current hardware with a new game and upgrade if it doesn't give you the performance you want. I doubt a used HD 7850 is going to drop so much more in the near future from its current 90-ish dollars that it would matter much.
 
GTA 5 comes out this Q4. So wait for next gen cards and see if they launch by that time. my guess is you might see the high end cards launch by late q4 or early q1. but they might be priced out of your range. if you can spend 400 bucks and next gen cards don't launch by the time GTA5 is out pick up a R9 290. the sapphire tri-x gets the nod as the cooler is the best. :thumbsup:
 
might want to be prepared for a cpu upgrade too if you are picky about framerates. and I assume you have at least 8gb of ram.
 
Buy the card when you need it, not before. The way the industry works is that in a year more performance will be available at the same price point, it could well be 2x the performance of todays cards, or it might be 15% but there will be more performance in the future. This hasn't broken down for the past 40 years of silicon progress and its unlikely to this year.

So there is no point buying a card today for use some time out in 2015. If you want the performance today for todays games then that is a different story, but there is no way you can future proof yourself for a game not released yet. We have no idea what performance level it will practically need, we have no idea which manufacturers card it will run best on nor do we know if there is a card on sale today that can run it at very high settings. Simply put there is no point buying for a future that hasn't arrived yet, its a waste of money.
 
I bought a used Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X for my FX 8350 rig. It replaced a GTX 680 and is markedly faster with its 1920 x 1200 monitor. I like the 4G Vram and the FABULOUS cooling.

I have ventured into custom water cooling (see rig 1 below) and even have the FX 8350 custom water cooled but see no reason to buy a water block for the Tri-X as the cooler is so good. Of the 3 choices in the OPs original post (770, 280X & 290), I think he hit a grand slam with the Sapphire R9-290 Tri-X.

This comment is from a guy with rig 1 below (3930k with heavily OC'd GTX780 Classified) ; rig 2 3770k with 2 GTX670 FTWs in SLI and rig 3 FX 8350 with Sapphire R9 290 Tri-X

I have been really impressed with how quiet the Sapphire 290 Tri X is, the cooling is incredible on that card. Its not true of all the 290's obviously but that particular model is just amazingly quiet, as quiet as the rest of the machine. First boot up and I had to check the fans were running as I couldn't hear it. Incredible, its been a long time since I had a GPU that wasn't a monster noise maker and needed water cooling to shut it up.
