768mb PC2100 or 512mb PC3200

Am in a quandy about the above for my upgrade to an MSI K7N2 Delta board.

Either to just have a new stick of PC3200 512mb or to keep thr 256mb PC2100 in there as well, if I put this in the third slot would it run as Dual Channel, would this give it enough boost to get closer to the single stick PC3200 performence?

Cheers,

Corm

You can keep the two sticks in the two slots that are next to each other, and put the 512 stick in the separated slot and still be dual channel (since the banks will be balanced 512/512). If your CPU is above a 266fsb or you're overclocking you'd want to get the 2100 out of there.

I will only have a single stick of PC2100 on top of the PC3200 512mb....when running in dual channel mode does it only have half the total memory like raid mirrored?

Jamie

If you only have 256mb of PC2100 it won't be dual channel, it'll just be single channel with no RAM "mirrored." Sorry I misread what you were saying. I'd go w/just the one stick of 512mb PC3200 and pick up another one down the road.

ok, if you have one stick of 2100, and one stick of 3200, and run it in dual channel, assuming both sticks are 512mb, then you will have 1gb of ram, but it will probably only run well at around 133-140fsb.

OK...I am getting the idea now....so what would be better overall....

Go for 2x 256mb PC2100 for now and then get 2x512mb PC3200 in the future.

OR

get rid of the PC2100 and go for 1x512mb PC3200 and get another stick to get dual channel going in the future.

Cheers Again,

Jamie

p.s: will be running an Athlon XP 2500+ (Barton)...may overclock a little after using for a while.

If you're running the barton you should dump the PC2100 and go for the PC3200. Otherwise you won't be able to run it at it's rated speed (unless your PC2100 will seriously overclock).

Damn it bradruth, just spent another £65 because of you!....😉 was tempted for about 2 second by generic RAM but it was only about £8 cheaper than crucial so not worth it!

So, will be selling off the old ram and going single channel for now, dual channel a bit later!

Jamie

if you have the money go dual channel, if you don't go single, the difference isn't so much anyway in AMD systems
