I had to reformat my computer and I lost all my seti info. But in about one week I am building a dual Tualatin (1.26Ghz w/512k cache). I was just wondering if anyone had that link to figure out approximately how long it will take to do one WU.

If you're lucky, maybe you'll get close to Xeon III times with that (considering a little bigger cache than the Cumine but less than the Xeon III 1MB). I sure don't see anything about the P4's 512K cache helping the cause vs a same-MHz XP, so the Tualatin may not be any better. 🙁

Figure on maybe 4 - 4.5hrs/WU when run dual, not OC'd?

Ars TLC SETI benchmark page has a couple OC'd ones run singly listed at ~3.2 hrs/WU. Neither Max nor Roelof have updated the database recently though. 🙁

[EDIT: Do you plan to run it dual? That's where you lose time unless you have a cache bigger than 512K.]

overall you will be doing more WU's faster, but with a dually each CPU will be competing for memory bandwidth unless each CPU has about 1 MB of cache. for instance, if a CPU could do a WU in 4 hours by itself thats 6 WU's a day, but when it's running dual mode lets say each CPU can do one in 5 hours. Thats 9.6 a day.

What happens is this - the SETI program is about 800K in size when running. The 3.x client made it so that it can swap pieces of that (~200K each) into the small 256K cache of the Cumines and T-birds. However, that switching means that 600K goes into the slower RAM. NOW.... if you have 2 CPUs, each with a process doing that, both will be dumping (and fighting over) that slower RAM. Then if you add on the normal task and context switching, you'll lose some time when compared to running SETI on a single processor.

The only way to minimize this effect is to get a CPU with at least 1MB cache, like the Xeons. I run SETI on my dual Xeon III 500 1MB and generally get the same times running dual as when running singly. In fact, I've found that if I throw all the critical stuff onto CPU0 using 2K AS and setting the processor affinity, I can run the SETI process on CPU1 at "Realtime", which is impossible to do on CPU0... and it'll run faster over there than the process on CPU0 (obviously set to nothing higher than "below normal" or things will crawl)! But again, this is because of the Xeon's goods. 🙂

[EDIT: Fingers has the quicker fingers...lol!!! 😛]

Did I mention they are gonna be in DDR setup? 😀

Cool. Some TeAm-mates in here dangled a refurbished Newegg dual Athlon MP Tyan board in my face in this forum and I bought one! :Q 😛

Gotta decide on what CPUs to stick in there since T-birds & XPs will work (the XPs will with an L5 mod). 😀

Poof, that L5 mod is only for the very newest ones, most should work without it 🙂

Nice new computer!

ConfusedBW

thanks.....the only thing is that ram is damn expensive and i can only afford 256 megs....so when the prices go down, im gonna get atleast another 256 if not 512 depending on the price

Nice new computer!

ACK!! I have no place to plug it in!!! 🙁

Too... many.... 'puters! :Q 🙁

And ION - I only put 256's or less in my boxen (except the dual Xeon, which got a 512MB stick 'cause I couldn't get any more "instant" 256s for it - this was after it chewed through 2, 256MB ECC registered DIMMs. 🙁)

Poof,
Since you don't have a place to plug it in, you can always send it over to me, it will match the one I bought the same day. Mine arrived this morning. Don't you just love that fresh motherboard smell in the morning!!! I'll be at Fry's next week in Houston and can grab another sx-830 case for it.
I'm thinking xp-1800's.

Poof, I guess having that 6th finger on each hand has finally paid off!

Anyways, I liked your explanation much better 🙂

Oh yeah, I was just kidding about the extra fingers.

for 2 cool points, can anybody guess why my nickname is Fingers¿
