If an x1600pro and 7600GS both have 12 pixel pipelines and 256MB of GDDR2 but the ati is 500MHz vs. the nvidia's 400MHz does that mean that the ati will be better? or is it like intel and amd how you can't compare MHz.

also, which card is better if the x1600pro has 512MB and the 7600GS has 256MB?

X1600 can only output 4 pixels / clock because it has only 4 ROPs while the 7600GS can output 8 pixels / clock. Also the X1600 only has 4 texture units while 7600GS has 8 or 12, can't remember exactly what it was.

I'd say 7600GS is the better one

I'm sorry it was unclear, i was refering to the core speed not the ram speed

I apologize for the upcoming noob questions:

1. I thought they both have 12 pixel pipelines, doesn't that mean that they both output 12 pixels per clock?

2. What's an ROP?

Well, no, the X1600pro above is not better than the 7600GS, the X1600XT is tho...

would you care to elaborate why the 7600GS is better?

Nope. They can process internally 12 pixels / clock but they can't output 12 pixels / clock due to the fact that they don't have 12 ROPs but only 4(x1600) and 8(7600).

2. What's an ROP?
Either Rendering Output Unit or Raster Operations Pipeline. Which ever you like to call it

Cause' reviews say so!! ;) Firingsquad had a pretty good review that showed it as better than the X1600Pro - mainly because although they both have 12 shaders, X1600 is 4 pipe and 7600 is 12 pipe. I'll go and search for it..... [EDIT] Here we go: http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/geforce_7600_gs_preview/

[EDIT 2] Bad example - it shows it being close ish to X1600XT. with Firingsquad "assuming" it's better than X1600Pro in it's conclusions....

The 7600 is 8 "pipe" card, not 12.

No - 7600 has 8 ROP's, but is a 12 pipe design - a bit like 6600GT had 4 ROP's but was 8 pipe.

Depends on what you think it is a pipe. For me pipe is the number of ROPs because that's tells what it is capable of outputting to the screen and thus the 7600 is a 8 pipe design for me.

Ta!!! I'll need another as well!!!! So many things: Right, did a google - looks like there's shader units, pixel pipes (the traditional "pipe"), ROP's, TMU's, and some other things - why can't it be simple!!

If it was that simple we'd all be working for nvidia or ati and getting fat paychecks :)

oh and here's the beer you wanted

7600GS is definitely a faster card than the X1600Pro; in fact in some cases it will even outperform a X1600XT:

see these benchmarks from Trustedreviews pitting a Leadtek 7600GS against the HIS X1600XT Turbo:
http://www.trustedreviews.com/article.aspx?page=6437&head=0

But seriously I'd say don't bother with either of these cards unless your budget is tight and just go for a 7600GT instead.

I would say get the 7600GS if you are on a tight budget, but if not, I would recommend this X850XT:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102688
$160 plus shipping($140 plus shipping after rebate).

would you reccomend the x850xt over the 7600 GT?

Does Pixel Shader 3 matter to you?

http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware...850XT-6800GS-7600GT-ftopict180026.html

Here's a link to a thread to a forum where someone's debating between the X850XT and 7600GT. Look at this and decide. Just don't go for a 6800GS, BTW, because both cards will own a 6800GS.

http://forums.anandtech.com/messageview...&STARTPAGE=1&FTVAR_FORUMVIEWTMP=Linear

And here is another thread for more info on it.

I have seen that the X1600 PRO is only marginally faster than the X700 PRO, the jump is not as big as we saw with the 9600 PRO based X600 PRO to the X700 PRO. A moderate jump can be seen if we compare it to the X1600XT, but will be the same if we compare it against the X700XT (Which doesn't exist). nVidia seems to be more completed in the mainstream, the 7600GS/GT is quite faster than the 6600GT.
