7600 AGP?

I know it's all speculation, but I'm interested in upgrading my MCE2005 machine from a x800xl. What do you think the chances are for a 7600 AGP card and when do you think it will be released

There will be 7600GS AGP. It was mentioned in INQ sometime ago. Since the 7600 series uses matured 6600PCBs im sure they can figure out a way to sell the 7600 cards in AGP using the HSI chip just like they did wiht 6600GT AGP.

Why would they? People are lining up to pay $300 for cripled 7800 cores with the 7800GS. The 7600GS in agp would run circles around that card. The agp market is very mature, and simply isn't growing to justify the R&D to provide a high bang/buck card.

Would it take a lot of work to make a 7600GS AGP? No. Would it make business sense? No.

im sure someone will do it, its not like nvidia has to make a new reference design for it.

some board maker i'm sure will hve a ton of old 6600gt pcbs sitting there with no chips on them, stick some ddr3 1000mhz ram they have sitting around and a bunch of 7600gt chip on it and be done.

i dont think they would even have to do any real work, gigabyte even sells an hsi bridge based agp to pci-e adapter for low profile cards, they'd basically just be soldering a gpu on and changing a bios. i'm sure its already in the process of being done.

Remember that the G70 core has been out of production. AGPers wouldnt mind 7600Gs/GT AGP.

But i have to agree its not NV but really its board partners that are going to decide either or not to release a AGP variant.

I don't mind (too much) upgrading to a PCI-E video card but all the motherboards only have 3 PCI slots. with a media center PC this is limiting my upgrade path. Wish someone would start making a MB with PCI-E video with 5-6 PCI slots. There's very few PCI-E 1x tuner cards and there usually sold out.

what ever happened to the varient 7800GS AGP. I remember an artical a month or so ago saying there will be 2 versions. a '100' and a '200' version. Any news?

Also, a 7600GS would run circles around a 7800GS? How do you come to that conclusion?

Ok, so running circles is a bit of a stretch. At stock reference clocks,

7600GT 7800GS
6720 shader ops vs 6000, winner 7600GT
4480 MPixel/sec vs 6000 MPixel/sec, winner 7800GS
6720 MTexel/sec vs 6000 MTexel/sec texture fill rate, winner 7600GT
Vertex ops: 700 MVertices/sec vs 656.25 MVertices/sec, winner 7600GT
22.4 GB/sec vs 38.4 GB/sec memory bandwidth, winner by a mile 7800GS

So in every case not involving FSAA at high res, the 7600GT is faster by about 10-15% in theory. In practice life becomes muddled. Retail 7800GS and 7600GT come overclocked to various levels. Should I be comparing a $240 version of the 7600GT to the $310 reference clocked 7800GS? Lowest to lowest? Highest to highest? In any event, a $210 or so version from many vendors will be overclocked by a higher % than even the 7800GS superclock.

Looks like a typical 7800GS pulls about 2850 3dmark06, and a typical 7600GT manages 3500. Since the architectures are fairly comprable and same rev, it's safe to say most of the time the 7600GT will be about 10% faster. Add to that the almost no price premium to get a vastly faster factory overclocked version, and you see where I came up with the 'runs circles around' part. Only the 7800GS CO superclock from one vendor competes.

I was under the impression that the 7600 AGP variant was going to be called the 7600GS AGP, and that it would sport markedly lower clocks than the 7600GT.

not the most accurate info, but looks like 500/1000 or 1300, if they do come out with a 7600gs agp.

The 7600GT (pci-e) may do better than the 7800GS, but when it gets to AGP form it will NOT "run circles around it". From a business point of view (which will be the sole criteria) it would then be pointless to release it in AGP.
