75GXP question

it started making some weird noises yesterday. i thought it was my fan just squeaking a little cuz that's what it sounded like. but this morning, it would not recognize my 30gb gxp (bios does not see it). needless to say i think most of my data is gone is there a chance that it may come back to life? is this HD dead for good? *sigh...i know wishful thinking*

also...anyone recently do the RMA procedure? any hints or suggestions to get a 60gxp in return?

Chances are the drive, along with your data is dead Its happened many people around here (me included).

Visit here to start the RMA procedure - you better download and try and run the DFT program but chances are if your BIOS doesn't see the drive then the DFT wont either.

I know some people have recieved 60GXPs in return but I got my replacement last week and it wasn't a 60GXP, it wasn't even a 75GXP it was a frickin' 40GV (even worse than the 75GXP). See

My 75GXP took nearly a year before it broke down completely. It started making scratching and squeeking noises then near the end it started transferring data really slowly (it took 1 hr to transfer 1GB of data!)

Run that DFT test. It gives IBM a bunch of codes for them to assess your drive. Mine must have been really bad because they gave me a 60GB 60GXP for my 45GB 75GXP.

Heh, if it's a weird grinding/repeating sound it's dead, my roomate in school lost 3, mine is still ticking over 1 year later.....knock on wood, but it's made that sound once before and I ran the Factory Hard Drive test (the one that can kill it) and it reported everything was ok, and it's run smooth ever since. If you have this ability you may be able to repair it temporarily to get ur data, but i would reccomend an RMA ASAP, everyone's are going but just don't get too comfortable if you get a 60 GXP back, heard they're dying too...

i knew about this a little bit but i thought it was only limited to the 75GB version so i didn't really give it much thought. boy was i wrong. over at storagereview.com forums there are literally thousands of complaints!!

anyways...i took the 75GXP out of my raid controller and put it in my regular ide and it DID boot up for me. so after this i shut down again to connect another hard drive i had so i could back up my data. but then after reboot...DEAD again. so right now i'm thinking wtf is going on here. this thing is on its way to the grave for sure but i hope it has enough life in it for me to backup
anyone else had this happen to them? sometimes alive sometimes dead?

...desperately hoping that mine has one last gasp of air left...

oh yeah...DFT couldn't find my drive. gonna try again tonite...

That is what happened to my drive.

I held out as long as possible and then it slowed down dramatically. It took me nearly a day to get about 1/2 my data out of the HDD onto another one internally. After that I just gave up and ran the destructive DFT test.

Just get your important data out asap. Then worry about the drive.
