754 to 939??

i was wandering is there much noticable difference between socket 754 and 939 processors?

Reason for asking is I am an avid gammer and thinking of going to PCI-e card but dont know weahter its worht the money to buy new mobo and processor or just a new mobo.
I currently have a AMD 64 3000+

i think you should wait for socket m2 to come out, since there isnt a major difference. unless you can afford a 7800 series card. just start overclocking if you need more performance.

Asus K8NE Deluxe
AMD 64 3000+
BFG 6800 Ultra
1 gig muskin Memory (512x2)
SB Audigy 2

Maybe I should just up the ram to 2 gigs instead?

The only real difference is Dual channel and 1Ghz HTT (which don't mean much performance wise). Plus you have a lot better cpu selection with the 939's.

Originally i was going to wait for the m2 but then the i wanted a dual core cpu. If it wasn't for dual core i would stay where im at. Also the asrock 939dual-sata2 came out so i can use my existing video card and save money. Also, it has a upgrade slot for future m2 compatability. For most people, i don't think dual core helps them that much. Most people are gamers and a faster single threaded processor would be better. Unless you really need dual core id stay where you are at. Dual Channel memory is not going to make that big of difference.

Uh, your sytem is pretty good. It beats the Duron 1.8 GHz and Ti4200 I had previously.
I got an Athlon 3400+ 2.4 GHz which is pretty fast (socket 754). Look at pricegrabber.com or .ca for best prices.
I'm waiting for socket M3. Just kidding. I know socket M2 is coming out next year with DDR2 RAM capability but with only 940 pins. I want quad core and DDR3 capability. By the time we see most software/games multi-threaded, it'll be 2008 anyway so...
I might get Geforce 8 next year. That's it.

I love my S754/939 switch.... For whatever reason not really sure, BF2 runs a lot better on my 939 rig... no idea why, the CPU is slightly faster, the hard drive is the same, and I even had my 2GB of RAM on my 754 rig for a week or 2 before I went 939, and the 939 rig just works way better.. I am definitely happy w/my switch to 939 from s754!

Keep your current computer. If you switch to skt939, it will only be a sad waste of money for no more than 2-7% performance gains in best case scenarios.

As Duvie said... "I do not update unless I get more than 20% performance gains"... or something like that. I agree.

Heheh, check this one out. I looked at various benchmarks on http://www23.tomshardware.com and found that the Athlon 3400+ 2.4 GHz is about TWICE as powerful as the Athlon XP 2100+. I read the Duron 1.8 GHz has about the same performance as the XP 2100+.

In my case the upgrade is worth it. But, I read a message by some guy who said that he had upgraded and found he went from low to medium in some game and was not impressed. I endured my Celeron 667 MHz and Geforce2 for 5 years. Only this summer did I build a computer. True, I did decide to replace the Duron I built my system with but that's because after doing more research, I realized UT2004 really depends heavilly on the processor.

I would personally stick with your current system, unless you want to get an X2, then, IMO, the switch would be worth it .
