754 question: Should I swap my 3200+ Newcastle for a 3000+ Venice?

This has really caught my eye. Wondering if anybody has anything to say about hte 754 Venice's.

I don't want to go crazy with overclocking, maybe to about 2.2ghz like my current Newcastle, but will it run A LOT cooler since it is 90nm vs. 130nm? Also, I know it has SSE3, will that help with my encoding speeds?

Just wondering if it's worth it. I'm getting kind of bored with my rig, but I'm not ready to go to 939 yet.

Thanks.

Get one and see how it clocks. Then sell whichever one you don't want. :) Edit: I don't think SSE3 is worth much of anything, even in vid encoding - but that depends on what app you're using I think. IIRC the temps aren't much different between 130nm and 90nm. Obviously I'm not too sure about either of those facts tho. Plus this cpu may be better than s939 version, who knows.

I don't think it would be worth the $40 unless you were to OC the snot out of it. 130nm A64 don't seem to run that hot. The 90nm are pretty much room temperature at idle, but... $40 can buy a nice HSF.

I agree. I only sold my socket 754 system because I wanted dual core.

I agree, only makes sense to upgrade your 754 to 939 if you want to go Dual core. You can get an Opteron 165 Dual core for about $270, and another $100 to $130 on a good NF4 S939 mobo (DFI) and OC the crap out of it!!!!!

thanks for the replies!

I bought an opteron 144 and a dfi nf4 ultra-d from tankguys earlier today. Hard to beat $152 for the Opteron. I figure I can sell my 754 setup and recoup about 60% or so of what I spent today :)

Can't wait till I can pick up a used X2 from the FS/FT forums in a year or so for a good price!!!
