750GB Seagate FreeAgent Pro - $199 @ BestBuy

Take an additional 10% (or 12% with Reward Zone) off with coupon available here

With the coupon it comes to 175.12 if you have reward zone. Not a bad deal at all for 750GB w/ USB2.0/eSata.

Enjoy.

This is a good deal. 5 year warranty and the bare drive is around $235 so you're saving a good amount. Funny thing is the internal drive was near this one on the shelf and was marked at $282 for the same capacity/warranty...

I too found that odd that the internal was right next to it and significantly more expensive. I am definitely glad I didn't jump on the My book 500GB deal they had going on last week.

i have an eSATA connector that i bought for cheap. this will put that into good use
i have to pick it up later today... too hot outside and im too lazy 🙁

Got this drive when it was $180 at Frys a few weeks back, love it so far. Need to buy an eSata cable though, didnt realize I needed one until I got home, and the one from the MB is too short.

Is 698 gig all there is when formatted?

750 * .93 = 697.5GB Sounds about right to me.

They're not? I was under the impression they were. What's the difference?

Nope. eSATA uses a different connector. Most drives do not include the cable, either.

nice deal.. i got the 80gb one from a radio contest, and it's awesome

Yep, I have several of the 500GB eSATA/USB2 models and they're fantastic. Not the fastest externals by any means but the good looks and 5-year warranty are great.

where did you get your cable?

Also, does anybody know if this will work with cable DVR's like Scientific Atlanta 8300HD to expand it's capabilities?

I wanted one of these 750GB FreeAgent Pros for exactly that reason. External 5year warranted Seagate storage for an SA 8300HD DVR.

Apparently there are differences in firmware on the 8300HD. Depending on if your cableco uses "SARA" or "Passport" IPG you might have different functionality on the eSATA port.

Whoever wrote the wiki entry says that Seagate FreeAgent Pros are not compatible with the 8300HD. "Seagate's consumer line of external SATA (eSATA) drives are supported, but its flagship Freeagent Pro drives are not compatible."

There's a user created database of compatible eSATA drives for the 8300HD. First link is for SARA 8300HDs the second is for Passport 8300HDs.

Someone on the SARA list apparently tried a FreeAgent 750GB and it wasn't recognized. The only other 750GB drive on the list was an internal drive in a 3rd party enclosure and the guy reported glitches recording HD.

Lots more 8300HD discussion is at avsforum

I almost got this drive anyway, ~.26/GB for a 5 year warranty external drive is good, the enclosure itself is worth something. Though I suspect this drive will always hover around this pricepoint on sale days like 4th July etc.

Got one today. After 12% coupon and 100ish in BB Giftcards, I am now $75 poorer 😉

The drive is pretty cool looking, I just need to get a cheap ESATA cable, anyone got any suggestions?

Another question is the included software: Auto Backup, is it true the drive only comes with a 30 day trial version of the Auto backup? If so I will uninstall and stop using it, but it does sound pretty handy.

Anyways, thanks for the deal OP!

You have to use the code in the booklet that come with your drive for full auto backup. Also gives you 6 months of online storage through seagate!

Hopefully will have my eSATA cable in today. Can't wait to try this sucker out. I didn't want to cheapen the experience with USB 2.0 😉

These Freeagent Pro units are not only the best looking but the most functional of any external that I have seen.

Thanks, PSU.

Does anyone have the ASUS P5B Deluxe motherboard here?

I can not get my P5B Deluxe's ESATA port to work with this hard drive. I bought the esata cable Monoprice.com here:

I installed the latest JMicron Raid driver, and set my JMicron to RAID in BIOS. My IDE DVD-RW drive is detected by the JMicron Raid driver, but my ESATA isn't .

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

BTW, not sure if it matters, but the cable doesn't make a tight fit into the motherboard nor the drive, but it is snug enough so it doesn't pop out itself.

Unless you're trying to RAID, you don't want that turned on.
The link for your cable is missing. SATA and e-SATA use different style plugs. Look at the difference on the bottom of this page, and make sure you have the correct style.
Good Luck!
