Nielsen//NetRatings, the global standard for Internet audience measurement and analysis, reports that three out of every four home and work Internet users or 76 percent of active Web surfers, access the Internet using a non-browser based Internet application. Media players, instant messengers and file sharing applications are the most popular Internet applications.

In percentage terms it probably isn't all that much. An Internet Radio stream or Kazaa client running at full tilt causes much more traffic and is more widely used than games.

Just consider that CS is the most popular game out there and is already very happy with a 64K ISDN connection. Same goes to Blizzards games. BF1942 is more bandwidth hungry but not as widely played as CS.

How badly worded can it get? I'll bet that 100% of that 76% ALSO uses a browser.

That sounds about right... if they're merely talking in terms of bytes/bits moved about...

5 or 6 clicks last night resulted in about 10 gigabytes of stuff getting downloaded to my computer... I'd have to surf for months to come even remotely close to that much traffic. Just regular internet use for most people, via a browser, doesn't come remotely close to the amount of information that is traded via kazaa, bit torrent, etc.

(note: I didn't download anything I'd consider illegal/stealing My days of downloading songs are done)

The best that I can guess is that they're saying 75% of internet traffic is non-HTTP protocol - which is a "DUH" considering what HTTP primarily serves - TEXT!!!!!!11111oneonetwo
