74 Gig Raptor installation is making me infuriated

1. My friend got 74 gig Raptor. His motherboard is Asus P4P800. We disconnected all other HDDs from his computer and just had SATA raptor connected.

I made a floppy using latest Promise Trak 378 SATA driver from asus' website.

booted using windows xp cd => pressed F6 => pressed S to selected chipset drivers => pressed Enter to install them.

Reformatted the hard drive using Normal format => FORMAT FAILED - blue screen of death.
restarted, did all of the above, reformatted using Quick Mode now, worked.

OK. Installing files for windows off the cd. Failed randomly saying cant find file at x % point. After that cant install any files off the cd. Restarted computer, tried all of that again with a different SATA cable, using a different SATA port on the motherboard. Fails installing every single time at different spots off the windows CD.

2. Did all of the above on my Abit IS7 using my motherboard drives. Same thing exactly. Can't reformat using normal format (only quick). Randomly fails installing of files off windows CD.

3. Went to bios, changed Auto setting for the hard drive to LBA. Didn't work.

4. For both computers tried installing it without the jumper on the Raptor. Same problem. Tried to rearrange the jumper in all 4 possible spots - nothing.

5. For both setups, tried to boot using ATA and SATA drive - doesnt work. On both systems, the system hangs at bootup (where it tells you bios, devices connected - right before windows screen and the blue line running)

AT this point, i have no clue what to do or what the problem is.

How about put the drive on one of the native Intel SATA plugs instead of the Promise controller's SATA plugs, that change anything? Maybe the drive is just a bad 'un. Western Digital diagnostics

I would not go randomly changing the jumper, and leave your BIOS at AUTO.

You shouldn't do anything with the jumper, as they are not used for SATA. What version of the P4P800 is he using, mine only has the native Intel SATA. Go with mechs advice, and run the diagnostics on the drive. It's also possible there is something wrong with his windows xp cd.

HIs version is P4P800. It does indeed have Intel 2 SATA ports and that's it. So initially I was installing the incorrect PromiseTrak drivers for no reason. But....I still have the same problem, especially since I cant find the correct Intel SATA driver as it is not available for download on Asus' website.

I took the jumper off the hard drive since it says that SATA doesnt require one. Asus' website doesnt have Intel SATA driver so I dont know where I am going to get the drivers for the southbridge for Intel ICH5R. I tried to download them from Abit's website and use the same ones as Abit IS7 since it has the same southbridge - Intel 82801EB (ICH5). But that didnt work as I get the same problem.

I flashed the motherboard's old 1006 bios to 1019. Tried 3 different windows XP CDs and 4 different CD drives and 2 different floppy drives and 3 different SATA cables. I left everything as AUTO in the BIOS.

The diagnostic keeps giving me an error 0199 which western's website doesnt explain much about.

I got the hard drive to work in windows environment with PATA being my primary drive, but the sole purpose of making raptor the primary hard drive isnt fullfilled since the OS just wont install. Also when I test Sisoftware Sandra 2005 Lite for the speed of the Raptor, it gives me an error.

Also upon bootup, the primary PATA drive is detected as BAD by Smart monitoring. So now i am thinking that 1 of his hard drives is bad and the other wont install....this is just great.

Ok found the drivers I think should work - using Intel SATA drivers from Abit's website.

Problem is, now the HDD detects as WDC WD800BB !!! instead of WD740. I think the HDD has gone bad. I enabled Enhanced Mode so I can have SATA and PATA running together on the motherboard. Now we have 2 cd roms and 1 primary pata drive. So the 4th drive is essentially the raptor. Upon bootup every time it says Fourth Disk Drive Error.

At night the HDD woke me up by making 'clunkin" and 'clicking' sounds for no reason. I left the computer on but it was inactive. It was continuous noises (like it was searching for something). Until I disconnected it twice, it wouldnt stop making those loud noises. The 0199 error just says 're-test' so by trying all western digital utilities i get the same error. I am going to keep trying and then return the drive to the store for a replacement if i dont fix it tonight.

If i keep just the SATA and boot with it, windows CD says HDD not found. After full reformat hits 100%, the screen says, formatting has failed, the disk may be damaged or not connected properly.

I dont think this problem can be solved unless someone had(s) the exact same problem and has fixed it already.

Just an update on the issue: I returned the hard drive to the store. They took a day to do some tests on the hard drive and called me later telling me that it is indeed defective. I am going to pick up a new one tomorrow and I'll let you know how that goes.
