Nice. The 3dmark2k1 and Sanda2002 memory benchmarks are probably the most relevant now and they show by far the biggest increase when going to 166Mhz DDR. I haven't been paying much attention lately but how do they compare to, say, the current AthlonXP 2000 running on a kt266a motherboard? If I hadn't just bought myself an AthlonXP and bumped it up to around 158Mhz I would probably hop on the 1.6/1.8 Northwood bandwagon. I miss the days of the old celeron 66 to 100Mhz overclocks while staying in spec. 🙂

How is that Asus board/Sis 645 chipset?

comparisons vs AMD is yet to be seen.
id also be interested in how well RDram would do at the same 2.4ghz overclock.

the only problem is that i cant view cpu temps in windows yet.
a PCProbe or bios update will probably fix that.

Why would PC2100 scores be lower? If you have memory running at the same speed in MHz and the same latency levels, they should all perform in the same relative area... PC1600, 2100, 2400, 2700 mean nothing about performance of the chips at a certain speed, they just mean how fast of a speed the chip can run at... give a certain latency.

Granted, all memory is not built alike but PC2700 memory running at 166 in general will peform the same as PC2100 memory at 166 or even good PC1600 memory that can be overclocked real well to 166... provided they are all running at CAS2 or CAS2.5.

the pc2700 would probobly be faster than pc2100 at 133mhz due to the lower latency and lower nanosecond chips.

so its not exactly an apples vs apples comparison.

The biggest advantage of the pc2700 ddr is the bandwidth of the memory...the synthetic benchmark shows that however the other benchmarks do not show it mostly due to they don't need it. The slight increases are likely due to items mentioned above...

There is no compelling reason to get the pc2700 if you already have pc2100, unless you want to overclock the hell out of the fsb and don't have alot of dividers available.

Also if you are in the market for ddr then buy as the prices are not that far apart and it will have a little better longevity...

lets see acording to asus motherboard manual

100fsb - 1:1 = 266
100fsb - 3:4 = 200

133fsb - 1:1 = 345
133fsb - 3:4 = 266

166fsb - 1:1 = 432
166fsb - 3:4 = 332

so i want to know how you run your 1.8 @ 2.98 GHZ

when you state its @ 2.4?

or are you stating

100fsb - 266
133fsb - 345

for a 1:1 basis cause unless your running your p4 @ 2.98 you wouldnt get a 166fsb

not all the boards are alike. (remember im running a SiS645)

some boards use (CPU:MEM) and some are (MEM:CPU)

to be precise, heres how mines setup:
CPU 18x133= 2400mhz
MEM 4:5 (133+25%=166)
MEM 4:6 (133+50%=200)

The real reason I posted was to ask you about your Asus P4s333 compared to my MSI...

What is the max vcore you could go to with the Northwood ? (mine is 1.6)
How close is the actual vcore you get compared to the vcore setting you choose?(mine is reported at 1.55v when I set it for 1.6v)
I assume you can check cpu temp in the bios, do you think the number there is a real reading ? For instance does it ever vary ? (mine doesn't)


I'm trying to verify that the issues with my MSI board are specific to MSI..

correction -
max cpu voltage on a ASUS P4S333 is 1.8v for a northwood, 1.95v for a Willy.
it also has the ability to force (1.6v for Northwood /1.85v for Willy) default minimum voltage.

currently we get 1:1, 4:5, and 4:6 beyond 132fsb on the Asus P4Sxxx.
we are still waiting for a bios update to get the 3:4 option.
below 133fsb we get 1:1, 3:4, 3:5, 3:6, and some ppl also get 4:6.
above 160fsb all there is is 1:1.

Well that is better then the msi board that locks 1:1 ratio after 122fsb...I run at 133fsb now and scores like your 266mhz one...I want the higher memory bandwidth...

When I run less memory hungry appz that need raw power I can boost it a bit fsb wise and drop the memory a bit....

Have you seen if a 2.4ghz at 333mhz memory performs versus say a 2.5ghz with 280mhz memory????

im a gamer at heart so all my benches are 3D apps. i also encode DVD to DivX so im not oblivious to needing raw cpu power.

to answer your question - the loss of memory bandwidth kills game benchmarks even up as high as 2.6ghz/145fsb.

as for raw cpu power - even at 2.4ghz i can encode DivX at close to "realtime" speed (120min movie takes 130min to encode) so im not really upset at not running 2.6ghz for the time being.

when the new bios comes out ill get to play around somemore 🙂

What app do you use for your divx encodings??? I used gknot, but haven't done any in the last month or so....I do the 2 pass mode and it looks phenomenal...

hehe, ok OT:
i use Smartripper to rip it to my HD, then FlasKMPEG to crop and make a LowMotion DivX Avi/Mp3 sound, then i might use Virual Dub to edit and clean it up if needed.

The MSI 645 Ultra doesn't lock the memory at 1:1 at 122fsb. It has 3:4 and 3:5 up to 132fsb and 4:3 and 4:5 up to 160fsb.

For instance at 140fsb my memory speed is 350mhz.

I decided to try the Seti benchmark, I just finished running it the first time with the following results..

MSI 645 Ultra motherboard(Sis645)
1.8a at 2.4g(133fsb)
1 256mb Crucial pc2100 ddr
memory settings, 266bus,cas 2, ultra timing setting in bios

result..3:22:07
I'm working on the next work unit at higher memory speed now...

I have the MSI ULtra ARU i845 mobo...and yes it appers it does....

I have ran 129,130,131,132,133,134 and they all no matter if I have it set to auto, 200mhz, or 266mhz it reads as 1:1 in sandra and benches absolutely the same...I guess sandra could be wrong but I doubt it would bench the same...

That's because of the chipset, not the fact that it's an MSI.. your board uses the Intel i845d chipset, Thugsrock's Asus P4S33 and my MSI 645 Ultra use the Sis645 chipset.

Just completed another Seti benchmark with a couple of different settings..

MSI 645 Ultra motherboard(Sis645)
1.8a at 2.5g(139fsb)
1 256mb Crucial pc2100 ddr
memory settings, 346 bus,cas 2.5, normal timing setting in bios

result..3:10:06

Wish my memory was good enough to run cas2 and aggressive timing at 346 bus. 😉
