720P vs 1080i

My cable box doesnt support 1080P, but does support everything else. It's currently on 1080i, but i was wondering if 720P would be better. Thoughts?

Usually HD TV is broadcast in 1080i so stick with that for the best quality. 720p will probably be downscaled by the cable box.

Some boxes have a native option which would be best but it adds a delay when switching between 1080i and 720p channels.

There are no OTA broadcasts in 1080p except for some limited Direct TV/Dish network programming. If you want 1080p watch Blu-ray...

Everything else is broadcast in 1080i/720p. I honestly can't tell the difference between 720p and 1080i on my Panasonic plasma. They both look outstanding.

You are bound to get as many answers as there are post regarding this question. The answer really depends on the TV, but in my own experience, 1080i always looked better than 720P. Though the 720P images tend to be smoother when playing games or other fast motion stuff, the increased resolution of 1080i is worth it.

Agree with the post above. The two main things to consider are the percentage of your viewing which is high action (sports, etc) as opposed to slower or still views...and the native resolution of your tv.

If your tv/display is 1080p and you sit close/have a large screen, then you may see a difference. Most likely it won't even matter to you.

Change it and see if you can tell the difference?? If it works how you got it set up then that is fine too. Whatever makes you happy. I have to wear glasses to watch the TV from my couch, so a computer monitor might be better for me.

if your tv is 1080p, then feed it 1080i, if your tv is 720p, feed it 720p

This. The basic rule is set everything to the native resolution. If you are watching a 1080i broadcast with the cable box set to 720p and then fed to a 1080 native resolution tv, then you have a downscaling and then an upscaling all on your end and that can degarade picture quality.

I can tell a difference between 720P and 1080i but only on my 56". My girlfriend has a 40" and I can't really tell on hers.
