720p Projectors

Currently I have a 480p projector and only used maybe 850 hours so far out of the 3000 hours which leaves me well over 2000 hours. 2500 hours to be exact. Not guaranteed but should have at least 1000.

Do you think it is a good idea to move up to a 720p Projector now or will prices drop a lot more in a few months ? I know a 1080i projector isn't worth getting.
 
I don't even know if there are any current 1080i projectors out there.

Prices are always dropping and the quality is going up at the same time.

The longer you wait, the better projector you'll be able to afford on your income working at google.

1080p projectors are really coming down in price and should be worth looking into if you have the budget. (Is that what you were talking about when you said 1080i projectors weren't worth getting?)

I went from a 540p to a 720p projector, and I really see the benefit. Of course, 1080p would be even better, but you would pay literally twice as much.

Do you watch dvds still or blu-ray as well? I am thinking it depends on your movie source as well.

I've gone from a 960x540 projector, to a 720p, then to a 1080p. Each time, the improvement was huge. If you can swing it, 1080p is the way to go, but you would get much enjoyment from a 720p too.

How much were you looking to spend?

 
I have a Blu-Ray and an HD-DVD player connected to my projector. Both are well worth the money, in my book. While 1080p would be even better, I would say that the difference between 480p and 720p, when using HD sources like these, is dramatic.
 
If you are happy with your current project, i suggest wearing out the bulb on it and then picking up a good deal on a 1080p projector at the time. That way you arent wasting your current investment in the old bulb, and you give yourself time to get better technology in the future making the jump more spectacular.

That's my plan with my current 480p.
 
I use an optoma hd70 720p as my main display device in the bedroom. Tempted to go to a 1080p projector as I have already put on 1600 hours on this bulb over the last 13 months. I get one free bulb from bestbuy, so when they one wears out I can swap it out and then sell it off.

man, now I really want a 1080p projector.

I say go for it! You can get between $700 to $850 for your projector on ebay if you throw in the extra bulb. The Sanyo PLV-Z2000 can be bought for about $1600 after rebate, until the end of the month.

there is no such thing as 1080i projector anymore, unless you go grab an old crt projector with an upgraded input board.

I agree to consider 1080p projectors, but they're not "dirt cheap". Even the cheapest of them are twice as expensive as a 720p projector.

A select few are under 2k, after rebates, and quite a few 720p projectors can be bought for well under $1000. I personally would love to have a 1080p projector, and if I were buying today, I'd get one. But I also know that not everyone has 2 grand to spend on it, and 720p looks awfully good. So just because it is cheap compared to what they were a year ago (6 months is an exagerration), they are not dirt cheap compared to what you pay for a 720p projector, which can get you over 90% of the way there.
 
I paid $1200 for my mitsubishi HC4900 which is a 1080P projector. I dont know what you guys are talking about.

im @ 6XX hours on my 480p (out of 2-3k hours)
I try out a optoma 70 (720p) on my set up for a weekend

it looked nice but wasnt worth the $1300 (at the time) for the upgrade

I bought it through projector center for $1695 and it had a $500 mail in rebate on it at the same time.
 
AI saw your thread on it when you bought it. But I have yet to see any deal remotely close to that advertised anywhere. And it looks like the $500 rebate is over now.

Unless you know of any actual deal today to the contrary, I would stand by my original statement about the price of 1080p projectors. You are hard pressed to find one under $1800, which means they are twice the price of 720p.

It's literally twice as many pixels:
1280x720 = 921,600
1920x1080 = 2,073,600

2.25 times as many pixels, actually.
