Are the .X numbers after the 7200 speed just revision numbers? Why the 8 and 9s now? Speed increase? Revision sets? etc...?

Assuming we're talking about Seagate, yes they're just updated revisions.

7200.9 RPM is .0014% faster than 7200.8 RPM. Every little bit helps!

Unless Seagate is selling an unannounced product, there is no 7200.9 Barracuda.

I stand corrected, Seagate just announced the 7200.9 series today. 500GB's, 16MB cache, SATA II and also a Firewire 800 line of drives:

New 500GB External Drive, 120GB Portable Drive, and FireWire 800 interface

Hehe, yeah, I only found out today.

Minimal improvement, but I'd prob. get the Hitachi, since Seagate NCQ only seems to slow it down...and also use more CPU?
