I still want a Lincoln Continental Mark IV. 🙂 One of the early ones from before all the standard features became optional and when the 460 CID V8 was still under the hood.

The GS really came into its own in 1970 when Buick installed its 350-hp 455 V8. The 455 boasted an incredible 510 ft.-lb. of torque at just 2800 rpm. The Stage 1 option was rated just 10 hp higher (same torque), yet bone-stock the car could run the quarter mile in the low 13 second range at about 105 mph. - Text

As fast as the LS1s. Kinda pathetic what 30 years or progress and technology have done.

Umm.. Those old engines were HUGE. MONSTROUS. And they got single digit fuel mileage numbers. How can you possibly compare a 7.5L brute of an engine to a 5.xL LS1? Come on. Do you really think 350hp from 7.5L is good?

I want this car so bad....

Seriously. It's exactly what I've been looking for.

A rare 4 seater manual(most are autos...yeah, yeah.. I know they're sports cars and therefor the standard 2 seats is appropriate, but having 4 seats is just worth it to me. I do have friends, you know.)

Blue(my favorite color)

Excellent condition inside AND outside.. no rust..

Why does it have to be in flippin' bumfsck Florida?

🙁

😛
I saw a white one of those in a driveway in my neighborhood with a for sale sign on it yesterday....car looked mint. Texas, before you ask.

I've always been a Z guy. 79 280ZX 5 spd, 85 300ZX Turbo GLL.

My buddy has a totally restored 79 that he has owned since about 1984. The engine has been done up to the tits, bored out, compression bumped, ported, polished, yadda, triple webber sidedrafts, goes like a raped ape.

If I could pick any Z right now, I'd like a mint 83 Turbo 5spd 2 seater.

If you want one that bad though, take a trip out west/south sometime. You see them all over the place and you'll have a good chance of getting one with a body thats in good shape (the 280s weak point).

I see a lot of uummm to put it bluntly CRAP in this thread, comparing a 455 to a LS1 and then stating that there are no improvements is just insane, or you just don't know what the hell are you talking about.

What's the gas mileage of the 455 Buick ?...10 MAYBE 12 m.p.g.

What's the gas mileage of the LS1 ? mid 20's

How about emissions ?

The Buick puts out 100 times the tailpipe emissions that the LS1 does.

What about quality control of these two vehicles, the LS1 is good for over 200,000 miles, the 455, 100,000 miles.

The LS1 is 346 cubic inches, the Buick, 455.

Come on people, open your eyes, just because you personally cannot repair the modern technology, it does not mean that it's crap.

There is no doubt what-so-ever that modern fuel injection is a god send, better provability, better fuel economy, more power, longer lasting engines, much, much MUCH better tailpipe emissions.

I am currently building a custon fuel injection system for my 1966 Chevy Corvair engine that's in my VW Bus, why go through all the trouble ?

Read my above statement.

Rant over..........................................

There's a 71 Merc Montego with a 302 auto for sale across the street from me for $1,700.

The point is, there is NO SUBSTITUTE for cubic inches. Even today, few sports cars even equal that 30 year old technology in 1/4 mile performance. That's pathetic. Imagine what a couple thousand dollars worth of EFI could do with a big block, not to mention a few thousand dollers worth of blower!

Try to keep that in mind as your Buick understeers into the ditch at speeds that wouldn't even scuff the tires of a modern performance car.

Last time I raced from a stoplight, there were no ditches within a mile. Have fun proving how fast your car is, on back country roads... all by yourself...

I have a 1977 Cutlass Supreme for sale... does that mean I can get more money for it since it's a hot collectible? =)

First off all cars built today are set with understeer, secondly most of the cars from the 70's handle just fine for the power they are packing. It's when you cram engines into tiny cars that have most of the weight in the front that need special suspensions to compensate for a lack of balance.

I wouldn't even begin to think a bias ply clad, old Buick could compete on a road course in stock form. Todays cars would fare much better. But, to me this is just STUPID! As I said, 99.5% of the time your car is merely transportation from point A to point B. WTF do you want to rattle your teeth all that time? My wife's G. Marquis has 16" wheels with the short sidewalls. The thing corners like it's on rails, and I'm not exaggerating, but it REALLY isn't worth it, because you can feel every bump in the road. That's just dumb for a supposedly comfortable cruiser. I notice cop cars have 15" wheels, and they need handling more than I do! What do they know that we don't? 😕

My bus is definitely worth more than the $900 I paid for it many years ago. I've been offered $5000 for it just having it parked at a friends house (off a main road). There would always be notes left under my wipers with phone numbers etc from folks that wanted to buy it.

Hahaha.. lots of Z guys in the thread... Eli, my first car was a '79 280ZX.. and my most recent was a 91 300ZXTT... shoot me a PM sometime about Z cars...

BTW: I don't think there is anything at all rare about a 2+2 manual 280... the 280ZX _Turbo_ is what was rare in a manual, those came mostly in automatics - but the vast majority of 280s I've seen were 5 speeds. I think my dad bought mine for $750, I drove it for 5 years, sold it to my roommate with 180k miles on it (let him have it for $500) and I think he probably put another 30-40k miles on it before the transmission started making a noise like rocks in a blender... at which point HE sold it to some guy for $500.. hahaha.

Flot
(Z FIEND)

PS: I've thought about buying another old 280ZX... but don't think I'd want to pay more than ~$1000 for one... like someone else said, an 83 turbo 5spd might be fun... I used to beat the hell out of that Z, and had almost no problems with it. My friends used to hate it when I made u-turns, somehow the back end would always swing around to say hi... lol...
