700m vs a fujitsu

I'm looking into a x-mas laptop gift for myself.

I've configured a 700m for 1562$

dvd-rw
512mb 2 dimms
1.6ghz
60gb

then i came across this

I have to say these laptops are very nice. that screen is like amazin!!! price 1399$ has the same as my 700m config


Now which would be a better deal. i haven't heard of FUJITSU, no clue what they are, but they make this computer look great. i went to the store the sales guy told me its top of line stuff. whips all the hps and compaqs out there.

I'm a auto tech student. So i really wont be doing much office junk but more of looking up stuff. i need to be quick and speed is the name of the game. i need to get specs of cars and diagrams instantly and i need to see them clearly. Portible is another issue. i need to bring this around from car to car and what not. Another issue is this will also be my car entertainment system. so i'm going to try to wire it up to the car and stuff. I'll be watching dvd's like extremely, downloading videos, burning dvd's maybe a little encoding here and there.

Only thing i might do upgrading wise is slap on another 512 to push it 1gb of ram. maybe swap out the 60gb for a bigger one or just run an external.

Fujitsu is a huge worldwide electronics brand. They just don't have much market visibility in the States. They make lots of different kinds of electronics; I think they have a large storage division, etc. Their laptops are renowned for being stylish, light, and durable.

That C series sounds awfully big and heavy, at seven-plus pounds, for your needs. If I were you, and I really wanted a Fujitsu, I'd spend $1800-$2000 and get a really nicely-configured S6000 series. It's well under four pounds, and can also take a modular battery (which the C series cannot). Otherwise, choose the 700m or something else.

Can the 700m take a modular battery? My understanding is that it can't but I might be wrong. One thing that I do know is that the extended-life battery also extends out the back of the laptop, adding significantly to both weight and size. Do you need to do a lot of typing on the laptop, or is it mostly just going to be used as a portable reference device? If the latter, check out the P7000 series from Fujitsu:

For less money, you can get a P1000, which is based on a Transmeta processor but is plenty fast for reference needs. Plus, it's even lighter at 2.2 pounds, still has a keyboard you can do a bit of typing on if necessary, AND has a touch screen. That could be really useful for looking things up quickly. Those types of machines are often used by med students because they can go anywhere, the battery goes for a long time, and they have similar needs to yours.

If you buy a Fujitsu, I'd try to buy from a reseller like PortableOne. Check it out-- you can even configure the P7000 series with a 7200-RPM hard disk.

thanks guy, Well i do like the dvd player as well. i really do need a dvd player for the car. I would also be typing on this as well. because the programs i run do need things to be typed up. So a keyboard is needed. I dont mind the size really now that i think about it. a 4-7lb should be decent enough. i lug around tools more heavier.

The more bigger issue is the money i forgot to state that. i only have about 1200-1300max USD to really spend. I was looking at the FUJITSU because its fry;s and they always have deals maybe get like 350$ in rebates or so.

Oh also this would be my 2nd computer as well. for surfing and other fun stuff =D. So its 1/2 work 1/2 play type. No gaming will be done. But a lot of video stuff, editing encoding and burning. To me this FUJITSU seems right.



BTW. whats the model number on the FUJITSU i posted up? i can't locate it on the site. Maybes its been discounted and outdated.

Hey, check out the Acer TravelMate 4500:

Acer is one of the biggest worldwide computer/electronics brands, period. They used to have a big stateside presence; I bought a desktop from them five or six years ago. Now they are starting to reenter the States with their brand again, but they still sell mostly through resellers here. All I'm saying is, you might find a better deal somewhere else; I'm not stuck on PC Connection.
That's a pretty sweet machine for $1449, if you ask me. It's slightly over your budget, but what do you think? A DVD burner, MR 9700, fairly light, and a nice-sized keyboard. And five hours of battery life. I think that there's a slight typo on the page; the processor is a 1.5Ghz Pentium M, not 1.7 (I checked Acer's site).

Now that I know more, I can definitely see why you're checking out the C series. It seems like a really nice machine too. I just haven't seen one in person yet.

I think, but I'm not sure, that the one you're eyeballing at Fry's must be a slightly older version of the C2300. It seems like a pretty nice machine to me. They claim 4.5 hours of battery life for it.

That Acer model can also take a modular battery, I just noticed. You could buy it now, and if you ever wanted eight-plus hours of life down the road, you could get the extra battery.

yea sorry i didn't give you all the info. i just came up with that info when i read your post. its a nice computer. things that are slightly over my budget i raelly dont care. I can wait for a sale, i dont mind rebates or anything. But yea that is really a nice acer laptop. I'm not big with laptops, this will be my first laptop.i made the mistake with PC's when i just got the cheapest one. So now i wanna make sure i get the best bang for my buck.

I would love for that discount for dell to happen again. I missed it by 15 mins cause i had to config all the stuff.

I was having a hard time deciding between the 700m, the fujitsu S6231 or the Sony S260 (perfect formfactor) and got the 700m this am. Hope it works out!! It was $908 with the base config + 8 cell battery+ tax
