I just recently bought the 700m from the dell 750 off 1500 sale. I am not completly satisfied with the purchase. ANyone who bought this model happy with its performance? I can't tell if I got a defective item. The computer keeps crashing and I accessing the cd-rw/dvd from is questionable at best. It read the rom, but I can't file transfer anything off of it or run things on it.

Anyone having the same problems?

There is a firmware upgrade for the cd-rw/dvd if it's sony... I acidently installed it when i thought it was a driver. but anyways that should fix that problem

for OP send it back most likely.

I have installed some stuff from CDRs on mine with no problems. But I also have the DVD+R drive, so it might be the difference.

Call Dell dude!!

WORD OF WARNING: DON'T UPDATE TO BIOS A01

the windows utility will report success bios upgrade, but on power off, you will get a brand new paperweight

i am calling DELL right now to get a replacement. i hate their overseas support but they are nice. they are sending me a new one first and then i will just send the original one back.

mine works fine as well.. of course the first thing after I've received my 700m was to reformat it and reinstall xp pro.

Anyway my cdrw sounds like a jet about to crash my house when it is burning 24x..... kinda anooying, I hope it won't destroy anything

After reading up on the Dell forums, there was a BIOS update to version A01. It did cause several laptops to fail but dell has pulled it off there website.

I did a bunch of cd ripping and some burning with my 700m that has the sony dvd-cdrw. When reading pressed retail discs, it is a lot quieter than buring or reading burned CD's. I did download and install the firmware update so it could read double layer DVD's

Setup and reinstalled 2k here.
