Most of us are familiar with the Steve McQueen movie but here are some interesting details. For example, as Hollywood is fond of doing to ensure better home attendance at the movie theaters, much American content was added to the movie and either transposed the actions of someone else to an American protagonist or was pure invention, just like they did with the movie U-571 (the real U-571 was sunk by an Australian-crewed Sunderland and recovery of an Enigma machine & codebooks, by British sailors, happened in the Mediterranean with the U-559 instead).
