Yeah, the toilet scene is pretty bad in India. When you travel by local trains you can see plenty of men defecating in the open on the tracks. I can tell you this, the smell is absolutely horrifying, well obviously. Many Indian celebrities are taking up initiatives to provide a toilet per household and I'm myself contributing a tiny amount to UNICEF for their initiative to build toilets to stop open defecation. So at least people are trying to do something and improve the situation. I hope in my lifetime I get to travel in a train without having to see a dude pooping on the tracks.

Why poop on the railroad tracks other than I imagine its funny to see a train run into a pile of poop.

It's very common, for whatever reason. Some of the explanations I have seen are that the popular spots that are designated railroad toilets are generally far enough away from homes but close enough to make an efficient, common public toilet. Biological game theory in action: it's always best to keep your waste away from your population, as effectively as you can, given whatever circumstances. I suppose there is also this assumption that the state, in necessity to maintain that infrastructure, periodically cleans the tracks. I don't know if that is true or not.

Also, women consider it the safest option because rr tracks are the most public option, which protects them from the alarmingly high rape/kidnapping/kidnap-rape-murder incidents that happen in much of India. Running to the woods is pretty common, but also extremely dangerous. I think the railroad tracks is most popular with women because of safety in numbers. Men tend to shit in the woods.

Well, I don't think I've ever seen a woman taking a dump on the railroad tracks though. I think they go to the woods more often than men do.

I can't even fathom how they are surviving w/o 500/1k rupees. When I travel to India I basically live off those.

They're not. Lot of stories about businesses who can't afford to pay employees or buy product, shutting down because of this.
