At least 67 people killed, dozens injured in Mexico gasoline pipeline explosion

By Nicole Chavez, Natalie Gallón and Daniel Silva Fernandez, CNN

(CNN) — At least 67 people were killed in central Mexico after a ruptured gasoline pipeline blew up Friday evening, the country's health minister said Saturday.
Jorge Alcocer said at least 75 others were injured after an explosion in Tlahuelilpan, a town more 120 kilometers (about 80 miles) north of Mexico City.
Most of the injured are in serious condition, Alcocer said.

State oil company Pemex said an investigation into the cause of the blast was underway. The company initially had said the explosion was caused by illegal taps in the pipeline, and Hildago Gov. Omar Fayad called on the community not to steal gasoline.
Residents in the immediate vicinity of the pipeline, which runs from the cities of Tuxpan to Tula, have been evacuated, Pemex said.
The fire resulting from the pipeline explosion has been extinguished, Mexican Secretary of Public Security Alfonso Durazo said on Twitter, and rescue teams have begun to recover bodies.

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador visited Tlahuelilpan and met with officials at a command center.
Pemex said the explosion would not affect gasoline distribution in Mexico City.

The explosion comes as gas stations in several Mexican states and the country's capital have been running dry for nearly two weeks.
The López Obrador administration closed key pipelines in an effort to crack down on fuel theft, which the Mexican leader said cost the country an estimated $3 billion last year.
Drivers in Mexico have grown desperate.
Family members take turns waiting in long lines for gas. Some comb social media for clues about which stations are open. Others have simply decided to leave their cars at home.
Pemex said a new gas distribution system will have long-term benefits that outweigh any short-term cost.
Authorities have blamed fuel theft for previous explosions in Mexico. In 2010, a pipeline blew up in the state of Puebla, leaving 28 people dead and scores injured.

Apparently a large number of people were near a breach in a pipeline. I do not know if they had breached it themselves, however they were clearly stealing fuel. It *does* make a difference if you are just salvaging what will otherwise just soak into the ground, or if they breach it to steal from it. Then - according to reddit - a smoker triggered the explosion; not terribly reliable, but regardless, something must have ignited the fuel.

There is video: **EXTREMELY GRAPHIC**
Reddit:

Personally i see this as darwinism in action; im gonna go on a hunch and say that they likely breached the pipeline to steal; regardless, if there is a huge-ass fuel-air bomb in front of you, you move *away* from it (and call the police), NOT grab cans and run into it.

yuppers. Play stupid games. Win stupid prizes. Honestly with how much of a problem they have with gangs trying to siphon off fuel lines I'm sure this happens more often than people realize.

Fuck em.

Jesus that video is showing people burning to death. Should post a warning And all that wailing and moaning and screaming thats horrible.

Holy fuck that is awful. As dark as the world is these days, I can only image the type of gleeful posting going on at Storm Front and other Alt-right/GOP-friendly forums about Mexicans burning to death right now.

Damn.

well, that's pretty close man. Jesus.

It's unbelievable to me that anyone would go near a stream of vaporized gasoline shooting thirty feet in the air. It's like playing Russian roulette with an automatic. The wonder is that anyone survived it.

Imagine living day to day where that type of risk is worth it. If I found out there was a leak like that somewhere near my house I would never in a million years consider going near it to get some free fuel. Sure feels good to gloat about them getting what they deserved though.

Absolutely disgusting. I'm not sure what the value of this thread is other than to mock the poor who are trying to survive desperately. In my opinion it should be locked.

OTOH, it can demonstrate that Americans have no idea the sort of poverty it takes to drive people to take these risks.

The thread isn't the problem, it's the lack of humanity in some of the respondents. Callous people with callous attitudes about impoverished people in a troubled country, almost reveling in the death and injuries.

This subforum is called politics and NEWS. This happened today. It's news.

Nobody's gloating, im sorry that they died, im sorry they are so poor that they have to steal fuel, but they put themselves into harm's way, there is nobody else to blame for this.

Btw, it's been since confirmed that the breach was due to a tap on the line - they broke it themselves.

This is fucking thievery, jesus christ man, quit the sympathy bull shit and come back to reality. A CRIME was being committed. While the crime was actively occurring, karma decided to show up.

This is an active problem that is causing tons of issues with the Mexicans that aren't criminals having difficulty filling up.

It's not like all the people killed & roasted tapped the pipe. They just showed up to get the gas that was flying thru the air before it evaporated. Yeh, it was dumb but it doesn't give you license to be a holier than thou asshole.

Keep trying with those explanations in life, see how far it gets you in your defense.

Breaking into the pipe was one thing. Salvaging gas that would have been lost in the dirt is entirely another. It hardly qualifies as theft.

Hardly... qualifies...as...theft.... Wow. I've never seen 4 words used more stupidly. Your head is seriously located in your ass right now if you think you can justify theft this type of way.

Seriously, you have mental issues.

That is really fucked up. I wasn't going to watch the video because I didn't need to see people burning to death, but I decided to because I thought there was no way 70 people got killed, all while trying to steal fuel.

Obviously the people are likely very poor which drives them to take risks most Americans wouldn't, but I wonder if some of it is a lack of education too. Did they really understand how dangerous atomized gasoline is and decide it was worth the risk?

Although I don't think it would be anywhere near that many people in the US, there are people in the US who would be out there with buckets too and not just poor people.

Regardless, I feel really bad for the people dead and injured and especially their families.

But people died in fire. So justice is served.

I'm glad you are happy.

Wait. no I'm not.

you are but an embryo, flagellating about in the muck of life, just waiting to mature.

It is ever so obvious, how little you understand.

Obviously the guy having a smoke didn't have a solid grasp of the danger involved.

Would a few gallons of gas really make a difference in their lives? A big enough difference that it's worth risking the most horrible death possible?
I had no idea things had become so grim in Mexico.

Victor Hugo wrote a rather long book about your "four words"

It encapsulated the French Revolution, and such efforts and their influence enshrined his corpse in the Pantheon, in Paris.

I mean, just thoughts.

Have you ever been in a hurricane or related natural disaster (much less regular daily life)...or at least, read the Hurricane threads around these forums, every year? lol.

also, consider that the energy you depend on being funneled into your house at some daily convenience isn't the same model for the rest of the world. Just a thought.
