7-Zip

I did some raunchy stuff on my XP system yesterday that wanted to install 7-Zip to extract. I did, but some other junk got installed and I restored my OS partition from an image I made a couple of months ago.

Looking at the restored OS's Add/Remove Programs collection I see there were/are (as of now) two versions of 7-zip, 9.20 and 9.21, somehow having different icons. Should I uninstall both and install a later version? Or should I have any version?

i noticed also when 7-zip was installing that a lot of other unwanted stuff was going to be installed too. The earlier versions did not bundle extra stuff with the installer in my experience. This is what led me away from 7-zip and to pea zip.

9.21 is one of the betas/alphas. Last I checked (a few months ago), latest was 9.32 or something.

There shouldn't be two entries, though. I wonder if that's what happens if you install one version using the MSI installer and another using the EXE installer; since they're two different installer systems, it's possible that'll leave you with a duplicate entry.

It's also possible that one of the copies is malicious; I've seen versions where someone modified it maliciously or bundled crap with it and then tried to get people to install it. Shouldn't be a problem if you got it from the "official" source, of course.

I've never seen a 7z installer install other crap. Never. And I've used it for years and have been using all the latest alphas/betas, too. If you have an installer with bundled crap, then I'm going to bet that didn't come from the official source. As I mentioned above, I have seen malicious repacks of 7zip, but none of them are from the original source.

i must have stumbled upon a malicious repack of the installer..there seems to be no other explanation.

I'm sure that's what happened to me a couple of days ago. My machine was pretty hosed. I couldn't uninstall any of the crap that snuck its way into my system inspite of the fact that I declined to install the junk. That's why I restored from a Ghost image I made of the partition in early January.
