7-zip uncompression question...

I know compressing into the 7z format takes a while for large files.... but does uncompressing it take long? I'm averaging at about 1hour to 1hour 30min to extract a 1.5gb file in WinRAR.

I know it depends heavily on CPU speed but I have an Athlon 3500+ and I have no problems uncompressing anything else.

So... I'm just wondering is it normal to be taking around an hour for 1.5gb files?

Just a stab in the dark here...

As far as I know, sevenzip pretty much has the best compression ratios. You pay the penalty of longer compression/decompression times using max compression settings. Are you using max compression?

Try using ALZIP (very nice freeware compression utility) to zip/unzip up the same file(s), then compare file size and working time. The Alzip file may be a bit larger, but the time you save decompressing may be worth it for you.

If want a rar file I still use 7-zip


You post is confusing. You are uncompressing a .7z file using WinRAR? Have you tried using 7-zip to extract it? Is this a problem with all .7z files or a particular one?
 
No, I don't use 7zip to compress winrar. It does it's job very well and it's stable. It's a program that has an easy to use interface and it's something I already own. I've not really looked at 7zip but the advantages over winrar doesn't seem large enough to make me switch to it as a lot of my files at work are archived using winrar and so are a lot of my files at home. 7zip doesn't seem bad, it's free but only slightly better compression than winrar and can't unrar files, not sure on the times as I've never seen a test between the two.

I meant the OP's post was confusing. And 7-zip has no problem unpacking rar files.
