1953 -- CIA overthrows Mohammed Mossadegh, elected Prime Minister of Iran, on behalf of the British (probably, Anglo-Persian Oil Company and now BP). The Brits didn't want to pay royalties for their oil. US wanted their help with Korea. So the propaganda news story insinuated that Mossadegh's "socialist orientation" was a Cold War risk.
1980s -- First, the "arms for hostages" deal with Iran under the Reagan administration, which later unraveled in the Iran-Contra Scandal. Next, battle-planning and other assistance to Saddam Hussein in the Iraq-Iran War.
~ 1990-1991 -- The Gulf War. Poppy Bush's ambassador to Iraq, April Glespie, most likely caused a diplomatic error encouraging Saddam to invade Kuwait, when Saddam told her that Kuwait had always been part of "Iraqi tribal lands."
March, 2003 -- Bush the Younger invades Iraq, based on the WMD scare. Cheney, former CEO of Halliburton, had an oil obsession. Bush's largest campaign supporter in the 2000 election was Raymond L. Hunt, a son of H. L. Hunt, was a board member of Halliburton. This was in addition to being chief owner and CEO of Hunt Oil; board member of PEPSICO, EDS, and about four or five other corporations and non-profits; Regional Chairman of the Dallas Federal Reserve Bank. And his "master-of-the-universe" status made him prominent in the Center for International and Strategic Studies, where 2-percenters and former American military generals crossed paths.
Bush reciprocated to Hunt by exempting him from the building of a fence on the Mexican border along the periphery of Hunt's land.
When it was determined in 2007 that Halliburton had scammed the DOD of some $8 billion in false billings and double charges pertaining to their sole-source contract in the Iraq War, Hunt slithered away into the shadows.
April, 2010 -- British Petroleum turns the Gulf of Mexico into a toxic sewer. Halliburton was part of the consortium participating in the DeepWater Horizon project, drilling for oil in the Macondo Prospect (otherwise known as the Mississippi Canyon.)
Yes, I think I understand what the OP means. I've known about it for years.
I could also post a page from the memoir of a CIA man, describing a trip on a corporate jet owned by a Dallas oil tycoon. They were ordering drinks at 9AM on the way to the Middle East. The oil-man joked about his wristwatch, which only had "5" for each and every hour. "I always tell my wife I never drink before 5," he chortled. The story is first of all an explanation of "cover stories." The oil-man's private jet had a double bed -- so the imagery or symbolism insinuates what we always knew: "CIA was in bed with Big Oil." Considering the color scheme for classic time-pieces, I infer that this is an oblique reference to "The Black Hand" -- a name for the Mafia during the 1920s. In other words, "if one cover story fails, blame the Mafia."
