I'm not exactly a fancy chef, but I've never heard anything bad about Wusthof knives, unlike some of the anti Henkels knives comments. These are likely their lower end versions but seemed like a nice deal for $99 shipped. (Normally $249)

(Free shipping on $99 or more orders)

I've been debating on wether or not to buy the Sitram cookware on Chef's site. anyone ever use it?

Good deal on the knives, I'm in😀

It seems that Wusthof is going the Henckels way, using their brand prestige to sell cheap, inferior knives. I didn't even know that they made stamped knives. Looking at their web site, they claim "We design and manufacture each and every precision forged WÜSTHOF knife so that regardless of the size, shape or product "family'' the heft of the knife is properly proportioned. " This Gourmet line is stamped and not mentioned anywhere in Wusthof's web site.

for those that are interested, this is one of their top-of-the-line knive collections. go to williams-sonoma.com to read more about each of thier collections.

I was in need of knives a little bit ago and did some research on the newsgroups. If you go to a restaurant supply house, or visit one online, you can get very good quality knives for a lot cheaper than the "prestige" knives sold in department/specialty stores.

I bought some Dexter/Russell brand knives and I'm very happy with them. They were very inexpensive but of very good quality. I didn't need a full set, and to be honest most people don't either. I bought a chef's knife, a boner, a utility/tomato knife, a bread knife, and a carving set for a lot less than half (probably one-quarter) of what you would pay for a "prestige" set, even on sale.

If you must get "prestige" knives, take a look at the Global line. Very good quality, very attractive looking, and you can usually find them for less than the "prestige" lines.

Hope that helps someone.

Huh, huh 😀

All kidding aside, I agree with the suggestion to go to a restaurant supply house for good steel. I did the same, gave away some of the knives from my (stamped) Sabatier set, and kept the old knife block. Big difference, and the good knives were actually cheaper than the Sabatier...

The knife set is on back order. Also, shipping is $16.50!!! Plus tax, at least in Texas.

On the upside, the picture resembles the classic black series from Wusthof, which would make this a pretty good deal. Never heard of a "Gourmet" version of Wusthof knives.

BTW, what's up with the slow speed of this board? I know the head hunchos want subscriptions, but this is ridiculous.

Edit: Seems there actually is a "Wusthoff Gourmet" line of knives, which are on the low-end of the Wusthoff brand. Link.
