7 killed in SUV - used emergency lane to pass vehicles on I-95

I don't think the vehicle itself is to be blamed, but the people driving that vehicle should be able to control it. SUV's have a higher center of gravity, so they're more likely to roll than other vehicles. They also tend to be heavier, so they typically have a longer stopping distance. These vehicles do not handle well enough to go careening through traffic at high speed, regardless of the obvious risk of doing so illegally in any vehicle, much less one that you're not familar with.

The state police say they were doing over 90. The local radio station said that they had changed drivers two miles before where they wrecked.

Given that they were driving a rental, odds are the person driving wasn't familiar with how it handled.

The vehicle could hardly be blamed for this.

The driver was an idiot. Can't help but feel awful for the kids, they didn't deserve this.

I am in Auburn, its about an hour north of me. A woman was driving and the three adults were all women, the kids were the 4 others in the car, three were from one of the women and one was form another.

I feel bad for them all, they dont deserver to die, but on the other hand the woman was driving like an ass...it was her own fault...

Everytime I drive home from Vegas in I-15 west, theres always some traffic and someone always passing all the traffic up on the right.
Yep. One time back from Vegas, this dickhead in an SUV passed on the right shoulder. Then all of a sudden we see the SUV flipping over a few hundred feet ahead. I wonder if the stupid bastard ever learned from that.
Wow, not often you see vehicular justice served up right in front of you when people flagrantly disregard the law. Oh, there are so many times I have wished for something similar. Nice. Do you know if the guy lived or not?

I got to witness several dozen vehicles with disregard for safe driving wreck. On I-95 N, just north of Richmond a few years ago, there was horrible freezing rain. The road went from wet to a sheet of ice in a matter of a hundred feet of driving. I slowed to about 5 mph, and had the flashers on. I lost count of the nice shiny brand new SUV's that went racing along, doing about 25 or 30 mph that wrecked in front of me, bouncing from guard rail to guard rail, until eventually they ended up off the road. The morons apparently thought that SUV's could drive on ice while in 4WD. (I drive an SUV myself - it wasn't the SUV's fault at all, 100% driver error.) In NY, if someone has an accident like that, they're ticketed for "failure to drive at a speed reasonable and prudent for road conditions" - weather doesn't cause accidents. People do.

Oh man, here in Vermont that always happens. I always laugh when I white knuckling it along in my little compact during a nasty snow storm while SUVs blow by me at 55mph. A couple miles down the road they are usually in the ditch. 4 Wheel drive = 4 wheels slipping. SUVs are a little better in snow, but they aren't a license to ignore a foot of snow or glare ice conditions. I just hope they don't clip and kill some one when they go off the road.

Most recent one was a few years back, same freezing type of slick. I'm doing about 20 max on a two lane street, and some guy in a pickup comes up, gives me the curteous "toot" as he passes. Now, I realize it was not a "you A$$hole" toot of the horn, but I could not resist my urge later.
In a few miles, I get on the freeway and see this guy up against the guardrail at the beginning of the onramp. It was a flat corner from the intersection, and he could not hold the corner on that ice. He is out surveying the damage, and I give him his curteous "toot" right back!😛

LOL, oh man.

I didn't see how it happened, but I saw the aftermath. It had snowed about a 1 foot, maybe more. I was driving on the sunny day after when everuthing had been cleaned up. Offramp from Interstate 89...Ford Explorer is about 30-40ft off the side of the ramp stuck in the snow. Oops!

The winter weather can make some crazy crap happen, people just need to slow down.

People are so defensive about SUV's? Noone said it was the SUV's fault, but some here are already defensive about it.

I'm 🙁 at your lack of compassion for the death of 4 people, two of whom are reported to be children. 😕

Where does he show a lack of compassion for the death of 4 people? What about the people who didn't "show any compassion" but instead posted to defend the vehicle and malign the (dead) driver, where's the compassion in that?

Thats just awful! It's scary how a split second bad decision can turn so tragic.

Sad how some people make stupid decisions like that ALL the time.

While there are sh1ti@$$ drivers everywhere, putting one behind the wheel of a larger automobile just exacerbates the situation.

Is this one of those SUVs are bad threads?? if so its lame.

BTW feel bad for the kids.

You know it ,thats why he had to put SUV in the title ....

Sad story..people need to slow the fvck down and relax a bit...🙁

You know that it very likely wouldn't have flipped over if the vehicle didn't have such a high center of gravity. Also, passenger car drivers are much less likely to have that "I can plow through anything" mentality that emboldens them to pull off such stunts. It apparently just clipped a car and proceeded to flip over. BTW, he's just stating a material fact when he states what kind of vehicle in happened in. He just as well could have put "7 killed in car - used emergency lane to pass vehicles on I-95."

I'm not an SUV hater, as I own one, and have owned a few. I have to say, in my observation, here in CA, Chevy Tahoe drivers, are absolute ego maniacs on the freeway. I see no other SUV drivers, who cut people off, drive insanely fast, and ride people's asses, like Tahoe drivers. Most other people who driver other SUVs are not so bad, from what I've seen. For some reason, Tahoe drivers stand out. On thing I notice, is when traffic is merging and everyone is slowing down, they are also the ones who find a hole, and floor it, not caring if people are slowing or not. Also they are the most seen still trying to get around everyone else, even though the lane has ended. They will just drive as fast, even if it means having to pass on the shoulder, just to make a gain a car or two.

That's so true. I don't hate SUVs, but it's mostly the people who drive them and there are major differences between people who choose certain models. Those Chevy Tahoe drivers are the first thing I think about when I thik about a$$hole SUV drivers. They have the worst braking ability on the road and they feel like they should ride your a$$ all the time. It's almost like they know that they won't be able to brake in time, but that it doesn't really matter since they'll be able to plow through your car anyway. There are other SUVs that also have this problem, and usually they are the ones that the cheapest for the biggest size.

It's sad 🙁. People too much in a rush.

btw would a hummer faired any better as it is 'suppose' to be built much better then reguarly cars? Just wondering as I saw this documentary on how Arnie likes his hummers and thats how they started to sell to the public. They mentioned that they were much tougher then normal cars but is that still true now?

Koing

I think a hummer would have fared better as it's got a much more spread out wheelbase and isn't as tall as the Explorer was that rolled. Also, a hummer is built to travel on uneven ground (different suspension set up which would have made a difference.

The H1's were much tougher than normal cars for several reasons. Mainly because they were the same as the military has, but with more comfort features helped out alot. I don't know what it would have done to an H2.

The H2 is a pretend Hummer, it's based on the same platform as the Tahoe. Sure, they've made some changes, but an H2 and the real Hummer are completely different things. Who cares, these things are built to cater to a certain sense of vanity anyway.

Man, enough with the SUV bashing already it's a dumbass driver and nothing else. My ambulance is bigger than any SUV out there and even speeding down the wrong side of the road, jumping medians, driving down sidewalks, running red lights, and all the other crazy stuff our accident rate is EXTREMELY low. (never been in one myself) The reason for that is we know what our vehicle is capable of and we know how to look for hazards and the idiots that don't see/hear us. You would be amazed at some things drivers do when we are around...

Bottom line is that idiot drove beyond their limits in an unsafe manner and ended up killing 7 people, total dumbass. I feel sorry for the innocents in that car.

Agreed, and I appreciate that EMTs know their limits. However, do you see many SUV drivers with the word "limit" in their vocabulary?

Guys, it was a rental, and she had been driving it for less than two miles. Probably for the first time. She could have killed them all driving any vehicle going that fast in something she was unfamiliar with.

They announced that they were trying to make a 6 hour trip into a 4 hour one.

They announced that they were on their way to visit someone one of them met online, for the first time.

Sheesh...

They drive like my girlfriend! 😉

At least she's learning a bit, now that she's got a speeding ticket and a warning recently.
