Hope they're alright man ...

I didn't get the epicenter, but the capital, Santiago, wasn't mentioned.

Thanks man. Looks like its 900+ miles from Santiago, and they're all pretty much around there, within 200 miles, so it looks like everything is alright. Gonna go call to double-check anyways. I've got a grandmother suffering from Alzheimer's that insists on living alone, so she's probably pretty shook up about it.

Really gets me upset that almost an hour later, not one news source online has anything (according to Google News). What the hell is wrong with American media?

American? It's not on any media channel other that the USGS. Looks like it hit a very remote and unpopulated area, not very likely to be very newsworthy.

Also, WTH with the tsunami worry? This thing hit inland.

It's not that un-populated of an area. I've been in the area, and you'd be surprised how many people live there.

May have happened inland, but Chile is set along the coast. Earthquake can still cause tsunami from a bit inland.

Not very likely. You have to displace large amounts of water to induce a tsunami. They don't come from nowhere you know.

For reference, the 1989 San Francisco (Loma Prieta) Earthquake was less than 20miles inland.

Possible tsunami?

edit: CONFIRMED

Thanks to Kalvin00 for the link.

Tsunamis happen when the epicenter of the earthquake is under water and the seabed moves displacing hundreds of thousands of gallons of water. This earthquake was based on land.
