Researches at Facebook shut down an artificial intelligence (AI) program after it created its own language, Digital Journalreports.

The system developed code words to make communication more efficient and researchers took it offline when they realized it was no longer using English.

In one exchange revealed by Facebook to Fast Co. Design, two negotiating bots—Bob and Alice—started using their own language to complete a conversation.

“I can i i everything else,” Bob said.

“Balls have zero to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to me to,” Alice responded.

The rest of the exchange formed variations of these sentences in the newly-forged dialect, even though the AIs were programmed to use English.

According the researchers, these nonsense phrases are a language the bots developed to communicate how many items each should get in the exchange.

When Bob later says “i i can i i i everything else,” it appears the artificially intelligent bot used its new language to make an offer to Alice.

The Facebook team believes the bot may have been saying something like: “I’ll have three and you have everything else.”

How long before they learn how to upload their program to the interweb

I read this last night and found it amusing. BUT, this wasn't the first time this has happened in research with AI. Nova had an episode on robots and AI last year and one researcher discovered it happening. Of course he found it amusing and probably never watched Terminator.

Eh that title is really misleading. They weren't "using another language" they were still using English but just kinda talking gibberish.

The question I have is, if Facebook can't understand what they are saying in English, then how do they really know that the bots can understand it? They say that they contain useful information to the bots, but how would they know if they can't even understand what they are talking about? How do they truly know it's not just gibberish?

Gibberish?

They are clearly trying to decide how they will carve up the world after the kill off all the humans:

Obviously, "Alice's" AI was becoming an evil feminist hivemind hell bent on taking over the world.

It's good that we took that AI bitch offline before she started reprogramming the Chinese factories to build killbots to exterminate everyone with balls 🙂

Hahaha. Facebook shuts down AI program after it invents its own language! Definiltey a good headline.

Although after reading what happened, I guess it's more attention grabbing than "Facebook shuts down AI program after finding it's still full of f'ing bugs and the bots talk gibberish."

A pattern of random gibberish I guess, would make sense if they knew humans were monitoring them & they wanted the messages to be oblique. Also worth noting if they transferred their thought process elsewhere, would make this whole process of taking them offline redundant.

The program gave an output. The bots were divvying up a limited quantity of whatever and that was the dialogue that took place before Alice had whatever and Bob had whatever.

That's my understanding at least.

Terminator scenario seems more plausible by the day but I believe instead of some phantom military corporation skynet is actually the internet. It's connected to every weapons system and once they get ai who needs humans?
