I have a 1999 Mazda 626, and want to replace the front speakers as the rears have already been replaced (the car had a bose audio system, but the Deck had been repalced, and the difference in impedance between the amp and bose speakers made everything sound horrible).

The price is right on these speakers ($45 Shipped)

The Specs are as follows...

240w Max/50w RMS
Aramid (kevlar) Fiber IMPP Cone Woofer with Strontium Magnet
Butyl Rubber Surround
Latex Treated Conex Damper
Glass-Imide Voice Coil Bobbin
Long Voice Coil
1-5/8" Balanced Dome PPC Midrange with Strontium
Magnet and Magnetic Fluid
5/8" Dome Tweeter
3/8" Dome Supertweeters
Custom Fit for Ford and Mazda vehicles
Mounting Depth: 2-1/2"
Tweeter Protrusion: 5/8"
Sensitivity (Efficiency): 91dB (1W/1m)
Frequency Response: 30 - 30,000 Hz
Cutout Dimensions: 5"
Cutout Dimensions: 7-3/8" x 5-1/8"
Impedance: 4 ohms

Opinions?

In my 1993 Chrysler Concorde (large sedan with a nice sloping rear windshield over the 6x9's on the rear deck) I went through a couple speakers. I must say a pair of cheap Sony 2-way 6x9's offered a LOT of bass and decent mids/highs. I then tried a pair of Pioneer 3-ways which offered very good bass as well, but much better mid/high range. I honestly think 4-way is overkill unless you have a super loud sub system as well. You lose most/any bass you had with the 6x9's and get killed with highs. Go with a 3-way IMO, the Pioneers I tested a couple years ago were awesome. I personally like the Alpine Type S or Type R as well, not sure how those are to value though; and the Type R really needs an amp to sound its best.

I have always had good luck with Pioneer 6x9 speakers.

Although - I used them for mids/highs (fed them thru a x-over) and used a sub for the bass.

I paid a bit more and cgot them through Crutchfield, they cam with wiring harness adapters and great instructions. (Not that i needed them)

I have some 12" subs on order (an off brand...Ballistic I believe) with a Pyramid 240w AMP (2x120w), would it be a good Idea to run the speakers through a crossover? and if soo, can you direct me to some literature about makin a x-over?

Those will be good for the money, Cadence speakers (one of the few better brands that makes Ford speakers) will be better @ $100 or so...

But that's opening up a whole can of worms you may not be ready for :)

You can, but you don't need to...

The sub, however, will need a LP crossover if the amp doesn't have one built in.

It doesn't have a x-over built in because its really a car speaker amp, but the higher power will run those subs fine. Do I just need to use a simple capacitor crossover? or do i need to build a coil crossover?
