It's very disturbing that he doesn't even understand why it was wrong for him to do this. Is he a potential serial killer?

From what I understand, he is on his way to anti social disorder, and POSSIBLY on his way to becoming a serial killer. Especially at that age, he needs to know better.

Probably exercising millions of years of hunting/survival evolution embedded in his DNA.

There is a difference between that and killing a duck with a pencil and not even knowing why it was wrong. Most poeple do these things knowing that it is not okay to randomly kill animals with a pencil. That is not hunting.

If he had made a fire and grilled the duck then eaten it, sure.

Killing a couple ducks makes you a potential serial killer?

Uncalled for? Absolutely. Worthy of punishment? Probably. Anything more than some stupid kid doing something to piss off a bunch of other stupid kids? Highly unlikely.

yeah, it usually starts out there. for him to be doing this at that age and not know why it is wrong is completely fvcked up. the kid has some major issues.

Every kid that i knew growing up that took pleasure in mutilating animals has grown to be a felon or has violent tendencies

Hunting as society views it today is a social concoction, not an evolutionary one. Our genetics have not evolved to include firearms, hunting licenses, open seasons and the disparity between one type of weapon or another.

Just because we can buy meat in the frozen food section at the market doesn't mean each of our brains doesn't retain a killer instinct we evolved to learn millions of years ago, and was still heavily used a couple hundred years ago in our country (and still used in many parts of the world today).

Behavior that would have been rewarded in the year 1800 now condemns you as a 'serial killer in training' today.

Sounds like he could be autistic. Emotional disconnect from literal reality could explain why he doesn't see anything wrong with what he did.

While that isn't scientific proof, there are legitamate studies linking the lack of moral empathy early in age, especially when it comes to torturing animals and them becoming serial killers or just harmful to society.

um, and the other kids were stupid how? they cared for a duck and baby ducks?
if he doesn't know why senselessly killing anything is wrong, he has issues that need to be addressed.

It is well documented that most serial killers started on animals (torture, random killing, etc).

We don't have nearly enough information to draw that kind of conclusion here. Why assume the worst?

Do people get torn up when they intentionally kill an insect in their house or does this only apply to cute, cuddly creatures?

Obviously we need a waiting period and background screens before someone is allowed to purchase a pencil.
