More bang for your buck than DDR2-800

Of course, that all depends on whether or not you have a DDR2 or DDR3 compatible motherboard. LOL...

Then we're talking platform and not memory. If you are building a new performance system Core i7 is fairly reasonable now.

i7
$170 motherboard
$280 i7 920
$62 memory

775
$110 motherboard
$275 Q9550
$45 memory

An $82 premium is what you pay to destroy the 9550 and have a nice upgrade path for a couple years. i7 will have a lower TCO if you upgrade every 2-3 years. It's faster clock for clock in everything and in multi threaded apps it's no contest.

I'm thinking you could probably buy two sets of this memory and slap 8GB in a socket 775/AM3 motherboard and have 2GB left over for another system. 🙂

$230 if you get it from MicroCenter.

If you're ganna include rebates in prices then you can get a top of the line 775 mobo for ~$90 and 4GB RAM for ~$25 so there's an even bigger disparity in prices and a 920 won't destroy a 9550 but will beat it fairly handily. No point in trying to compare a 775 system to an i7 as they are two different things. No one will go i7 for bang for the buck. People will only go i7 if they can afford it.

Everyone building a new system looking for bang for your buck should be choosing i7 or AM2/AM3. Very short sighted not to. They are not two different things. i7 motherboards will accept the 6 and 8 core variants coming next year. If anyone is even remotely considering going 775 they should be looking at AMD and Phenom II.

man, ddr3 price has been dropping like crazy. my ddr3 cost me 200+ last month.

I built my system recently and got a 4GB DDR3 kit for $99 at Amazon (OCZ 1600 mhz). So yeah, it's dropping fast. I just wish rebates would fucking die already.
