6bit Panels = 16.2M colors, not 16.7M, correct?

I am looking at the L90D+ 19" LCD from Hyundai. I am thinking of buying 2 of these TODAY. But I am a little confused...

I THOUGHT it was an 8bit (24bit) panel because (a) Hyundia, Newegg, Chief, Tigerdirect, and so forth claim it is a 16.7M color panel and (b) the reviews state it has great color reproduction.

Yet I have read a few posts saying it is a 6bit (18bit) panel. So what is it? And anyone who has this panel, how is the dithering? Is it noticable or something you really have to look for?

As a side note for anyone who owns this... how is it in portrait mode? I have heard raves and boohs (shadowing/narrow view angle). So which is it?

Quick feedback welcome as I want to order these this morning if the colors are fine (6bit or not). I do webdesign and a little photoshop, so I want good color but very small dithering wont affect me much. Thanks!

I was under the impression that 6 bit (per channel...18 bit total) panels were 262k colors, not even close to the millions. 2^18 = 262144, 2^24 = 16777216

By definition, a 6 bit panel displays a maximum of 262,144 colors. (You're right; it's an 8 bit panel.)

6 bits X 3 colors = 18 bits; 2^18 = 262,144 colors. (Also, (2^6)^3, or 64^3.)

8 bits X 3 colors = 24 bits; 2^24 = 16,777,216 colors. (Also, (2^8)^3, or 256^3.)

They manage to claim 16.2m colors by including the so-called colors created by dithering. It's marketing B.S.

Yeah, I got the much. The question is how did they go from 16.2M with dithering (~200k real) to 16.7M colors?

That 500k jump is more than it natively displays and is misleading because it indicates it is a 8bit, not a 6bit, panel.

I should be getting mine soon, and will compare the colors to my 21" Trinitron.
