Hey guys,

Today is my birthday and think I should treat myself to a videocard upgrade :)

I've been looking at the

MSI (R7970 TF 3GD5/OC BE) Radeon HD 7970 Twin Frozr 3GB

This is the bundle with 4 games.

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814127732

or I can grab this locally from Canada computer and not have to worry about shipping.

http://www.canadacomputers.com/product_info.php?cPath=43_1200_557_558&item_id=060003

Both listed at $409 however the newegg bundle comes with the games plus shipping.

the CC bundle just the videocard no games but also no shipping and if I run into any technical issues with I doubt but you never know with the local one its a 15 min drive back to CC.

Decisions decisions....

Thoughts guys?

The games do interest me a little.

But enough to avoid the local pick up not sure.

Can always wait for a steam sale for them also.

Also what is the performance difference I should expect about 50%?

If you've managed to wait this long and asking for advice, then it would be my advice to wait for the next step up inn performance. It's just that the prices have stayed to high on this performance level that makes it feel wrong. Something new should have come along (and nVidia has sort of done it at an increased price), but it can also be that we have to wait until next spring before we see something really new (20nm)

If you don't want to wait I'm sure you'll be happy with your choice. :)

The next step up would be the 780 nv card but the difference in price would be alot more.

around $680 currently at CC.

Not sure if I would wait until next spring as i've been waiting for awhile now :)

I think he means waiting for the 9000 series cards. Been plenty of rumors as to a "when" on those, but not real answer. But I too would wait. A 7970 is a good deal faster than your 6970, but your 6970 should still run everything out there pretty decently.

Although $400 for a 7970 is a good price for sure. And if I was to get one, it would be the one with the game bundle for sure. Choose a slow shipping option if need be.

It'll be a pretty nice upgrade, especially once you overclock it. Sell your old card, sell the games... minimal investment for an upgrade.

I would wait the next AMD cards are just around the corner (rumoured next 6-10 weeks). Nothing worse than buying new card to see it's performance eclipsed by a successor within weeks.

Happy birthday!

Happy bday!

Happy Birthday!

If you are choosing between a $410 7970 TF3, I'd rather get this 770:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814125463

CDN prices for 7970 seems too high and need time to adjust:
1Ghz Sapphre 7970 in US is going for $350
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814202008

thanks guys.

And russian that price for the 770 does look good.

I am more of a AMD guy when it comes to the gpu's but will consider it.

As for the US card Does newegg.com ship to canada or are you forced to to use the newegg.ca?

I just found the answer to this question they don't ship to canada you have to use the .ca site.

O and another reason I'm sticking more with the radeon is Open CL performance I edit and render video for my job sometimes in Sony Vegas Pro 12 so the compute performance is important.

which we know is gimped in the 6 series NV card and the 7 series also unless you go titan which is out of my budget.

Not sure I'm going to wait jacky there is no release date set in stone yet.. and with performance parts there is always something better if you wait.

I'm not expecting 8 series radeons to be offer a huge jump in performance more just a refresh but I could be wrong.

Happy birthday!

Don't get the 7970 TF3. They are not very good cards. Mine was a 59.3% ASIC and ended up being one of the better cards. Go for a reference card IMO, this TF3 really isn't reference.

http://www.overclock.net/t/1384845/msi-r7970-tf-3gd5-oc-be-reviews

The reason I want the TF3 card is because of the cooling solution on it.

I always replace stock solution with an aftermarket cooler and from what i've read this stock cooler is good so I wouldn't have to replace it with a Artic cooling product, which will save me abit of cash.

Anything reference I would have to replace the cooler because the noise level won't be acceptable for me.

How important is the ASIC % really?

The MSI TF3 is not a good cooler. the HIS Iceq x2 HD 7970 Ghz is a very good card. see if you can fit this card in your case. 311mm long.

I would not touch a reference 7970 with a 100 foot pole. 1100mhz overclock on a reference 7970 and you better be rocking headphones.

Have you thought about saving $100 and getting a 7950 V2 and overclocking it to 1100+mhz?
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product...82E16814202026

You can get that for the next 12 months and just upgrade again in 2014 to 20nm. The difference between 7970 OC and 7950 OC is 5%-10%. $100 savings that you can use towards 20nm next year is going to net you more than 10%.

7950 OC screams, beating HD7970GE/GTX680. NV fanboys have been downplaying 7950's OC for the last 12 months since this bad boy made their $500 680 seem like a waste of $ in the right hands. :D
