6950HD and e6700 CPU?

I want to up the performance of Battlefield Bad Company 2.
I'm currently using a 4890HD and am thinking of upgrading to 6950HD.

I've got an old computer with an E6700 2.66 Dual Core.
Will the CPU bottleneck a 6950HD 2Gb Graphics card?
If so, will it bottleneck it a lot or will it still be decent?
 
with a 4890, your cpu is already the bottleneck for Bad Company 2.

btw it would be more helpful if you list ALL of your specs including resolution you play at.
 
for that game in particular, i agree with toyota that you will have to step up to quad core to see the biggest improvement.

also give us more information about the system and what resolution your monitor is.
 
System specs are:

C2D E6700 @ 2.66 GHz
4 Gig DDR2 Memory
Radeon HD 4890
Corsair TX650W PSU
Dell 2407 WFP Monitor (running games at 1920x1200)
Dell WG855 motherboard

well at 1920x1200 and using higher graphics settings you would get a boost in games like Call of Pripyat, Just Cause 2 and Metro 2033. in cpu intensive games though your E6700 is already holding the 4890 back for the most part. you will not see even a single framerate increase in a game like Bad Company 2 by getting a faster gpu. you would do better just to oc your cpu if that's the main game you play.
 
If you don't want to upgrade your motherboard and ram as well, then try looking for a nice used Intel C2Q 9300, 9400, or 9550 S775 Quad-Core processor. That'll make the biggest difference.

Here's an easy test: drop your resolution and turn off AA. If your performance goes up significantly then your GPU is holding you back. If not, you need a new CPU/platform.
 
What's the new AMD architecture coming out? Isn't the 6990 the top of the line right now?

I also heard that BF3 can use hyperthreading. If that's the case, should I go for an i7 2600k instead?

you can look through every single review and see that HT on the 2600k adds zero advantage over the 2500k for real world gaming.
 
Thanks for the advice and tips. I've decided to just get a new system with a few parts carrying over from current system (PSU/Hard Drive/Monitor/Keyboard/Mouse). I guess it's time to upgrade from XP to Windows 7, especially since Battlefield 2 doesn't allow more than 1x AA on DX9 systems and Battlefield 3 apparently won't even support DX9 at all.

Looks great, might wanna be sure the Noctua DH-14 will clear the G.Skill RipjawsX heatsinks, otherwise look for low profile memory to be sure.
And i'd grab a z68 mobo since they're priced very similar anyway.

But there is certainly nothing wrong with what you listed.
