Holy christ. The insanity. Absolutely the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard. I mean, who fvcking cares? Think of everything that will have to change - all printed road maps of the area, hundreds of highway signs, etc. Not to mention, the mass confusion this will cause as people who have been familiar with I-69 for years have to remember that it's something else now.

All because some goddamn stick-in-the-ass bible thumpers think it's "immoral sounding." Give me a break.

Welcome to Jesusland.

So I was riding on this Big Beaver when we decided we'd rather do 69, but if we kept it up we knew we'd end up in Hell.

indeed. who cares how much it's gonna cost. I-69 is gonna run clear across to down here in Texas, and we have DOZENS of signs that say I-69. Those things ain't free. but damn the expense, they're gonna save our souls!!

not to bring politics into this, but did everyone notice that the gay marriage ban was voted at the same time as the president? Geeee I wonder who all these religious conservatives are going to vote for while they're trampling on gay rights? HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM

As a matter of fact, naming the highway?s extension I-69 is a violation of the Interstate Highway System?s rules for numbering roads. Interstates numbers are to increase from west to east. If the extension through southern Indiana is named I-69, then 69 will be west of I-65, a direct violation.
This overrides everything else.

Flawed logic.

The Indiana extension that currently exists starts in Indianapolis west of I65.

The problem is that they want to build an extension from Indianapolis to the sourthwestern part of the state and continue it as part of the planned I69 corridor from MI to TX.

It is also a publicity stunt to draw attention to the planned routes.
Why are the religious groups not pushing for the existing section to be changed?

That's odd, because I-69 also extends NORTH of Indianapolis where it is definitely to the east of I-65.

I don't doubt they have a lot of people steal the I-69 signs though, and that's reason enough to change the name. They renamed one of the county road 666s in New Jersey because of that.

The lsat time I was on I-69, I was much more concerned with the crappy road surface than the 'naughty name'...

Looking at a map, if this extension is supposed to go all the way to Texas it is going to cross a lot more interstates than I-65. I-57, I-55, I-49 and maybe even I-45 will have to be crossed. It doesn't conveniently fit between any of the existing N-S interstates. If it is continuous it would be stupid to name each section differently just to conform to the "rules." When those rules were put in to place they probably didn't anticipate our interstate highway system getting so big.
