686b + Audigy

does it work ok?

or does it work the same as with the SBLive! ?

I'm wondering cause I know the Audigy will be the gaming card, and I will need to replace this Vortex 2 if I'm going to move up to win2K from 9x.

btw, how are the drivers for the Audigy for win2K? for Linux? I'm loath to buy anything from Creative, but it seems I have no choice if I want to do it right now.

unless someone can point out to me that they got their Vortex 2 card working the same as it did in 9x (ie, A3D 2.0 games worked fine, as well as desktop audio like MP3), I'm probably going to have to go for an Audigy, and I just happen to have a 686b southbridge, which hasn't caused me any problems with the Aureal card.

no I don't want to upgrade the mobo just yet (I'm waiting for the KT333A or the SiS 745 replacement).

why not get a turtle beach card?

XP has driver support for the vortex and I hear it works perfectly

Adul, I hear it works perfectly in windows (ie, Winamp, etc.) but I have yet to hear any comments on running game audio like A3D 2.0 when it comes to XP.

Why not get a Turtle Beach card? if I were to do that, I would get limited Gaming audio support. it only supports limited EAX and A3D 1.0 API's (as well I think as the DirectSound API like all cards). So while games will be made with the most advanced API that has a living company behind it (Creative and their EAX Advanced HD), I'll be stuck with 'crap' for audio in games.

same thing goes for the Hercules GTXP (which is the card I would get if the Audigy is a no go). It seems to be the best bet for Windows audio, and unless they develop their own API that outdoes Creatives EAX Advanced HD, I doubt their API would be accepted.

remember, the EAX Advanced HD isn't as good for positional audio as A3D 2/3 was.. it's close, but no cigar.

while it's much better than my sblive, I still get some dropout on my digital out from my audigy on my a7v133/kt133a/686b.

It's pretty rare, and only seems to happen on the digital out. A little disappointing.

XP has driver support for the Live! too... That doesn't mean all the features work.

bump, I know a fair amount of people would like this kind of info.

btw, can anyone tell me the score?? I can't vote for fear of throwing it off :-(

The drivers for win2K are pretty good now, I have the Abit KR7A Raid with the Audigy platinum.
I use Win2k now in NTSF and have not experienced any problems.
I didn't try the digital yet.
I wanted the 1394 Port for my new camcorder for video editing.
