Whoa, negative there ghostrider. I upgraded to a 6970 from a 4870 512 and the difference is HUGE. I'm talking having to run games at low settings at 1920x1200 (BC 2 and borderlands as some examples) to get acceptable frames where as now I'm maxing them out and they are so smooth... except for that occasional stutter that I think is my hdd.

I completely understand what your saying in the small performance improvements last gen to this (5870/480) but from the previous one the jump was gifreakingnormous. Now, if your looking at the midrange cards then that makes more sense, they don't see to improve much over the high end from before but high to high... dang.... 😀
well a 6970 is one of those very high end cards that I was referring to as being a large improvement so yeah.

really something was wrong with your 4870 if you had to run low settings in Bad Company 2. maybe the 512mb was an issue? I run the highest settings with 2x AA just fine at 1920. avg about 45-50 fps without HBAO and about 5 fps lower with it. plenty of times I am excess of 60fps. now thats single player though so maybe multi is more demanding. I also run Borderlands on the highest settings just fine. dynamic lighting causes some issues in a couple spots but it is more of a game issue than a gpu issue.

No idea if my 4870 was defective or not but the gameplay was not smooth unless I dropped many settings. I'm assuming vid ram had a huge part in it as I helped build a friends pc with a 5770 and it runs the game MUCH better. He also has an i5 so that is a contributing factor.

As a note I've never played BC 2 in single player so I can't really compare. As for Borderlands I had too many issues with stuttering and to get absolutly smooth gameplay I had to drop many of the settings. My tolorance for smooth gameplay could just be different, it's hard to say as I never checked actual frames so we don't have a good point of reference to compare.

On the thread at hand I am considering installing my 8800 GTS 512 in my main PC to see if I can take advantage of PhysX, just for kicks. I don't really care either way but with my 4870 going into my loaner box I have 0 use for my 8800 GTS... not to mention the almost new in box 8600GTS thats also sitting around.

For those that insist on running a standalone card for PhysX now is probably a good time to snatch up a GTX 460 for said task.

Are there any games where Physx is really impressive? Every comparison I've seen between Physx and no Physx has been pretty disappointing.

Q9550 @ 3.4 w/8GB ram

Batman AA 19x12/0xAA/AF Physx High

470

Min 29 Max 101 Avg 60

470+9600GSO

Min 29 Max 88 Avg 57

Mafia II 19x12 0xAA/16xAF Physx High

470

Min 3 Max 100 Avg 28.7

470 + 9600GSO

Min 4.1 Max 71.4 Avg 31.3

With these two titles it looks like the 9600 is hurting performance.

yeah I was figuring the gtx470 could handle both graphics and physx about the same as offloading it to the 9600gso. Mafia 2 recommends a gtx480 with a gtx285 for dedicated physx when running highest physx settings. honestly I dont find the effects worth fooling with having to run that kind of hardware.

I think vid ram plays a huge part in smoothness. Going from 4850 to 5770 made games like Dragon Age a lot more smooth for me as with the 4850 there were often very noticable pauses when running around certain areas while the 5770 was smooth. Granted the 5770 is a faster card, but when looking at the fps I was getting around 60 fps in these areas before it suddenly drops to like 20 before suddenly going back.

btw Toyota didn't you get a GTX 470 already? I recall seeing you running some benchmarks with it.

I returned the gtx470 because of noise and heat. I would rather turn down a couple of settings than to put up with that. I have pretty much played through all the most demanding games now so I am sure when I will actually get a new card. lol

Damn Toyota, considering that you like nVidia hardware, it means that the GTX 470 was damn hot, in that case, I think that you will have to wait until next generation if you want to go nVidia, or get another GTX 260 and have some SLI goodness.

I'm using the Galaxy 470 with the flip up fan and am playing Crysis 19x12 Enth. everything... card has hit max 67C @725/1450/1800. Fan hit a high of 73%.

I guess the power requirements are high but this thing is much quieter and cooler than my PNY 9600GSO.

Kind of want to SLI................
