Did you get this at the $235 price point? I still say its a bad buy at $300, so far it doesn't seem to be offering more performance than a solidly overclocked 9800.

Not for this Pete's sake, I hope. Silence is golden over here. :D

I can't believe that Chaintech is selling for $380. I think that's as close to outrageous as it gets: almost 30% over MSRP!

Wow, Rollo being constructive. There's a first ;)
All sarcasm aside, congrats on the new card. When you say your friend hooked you up, does that mean he just gave you one, or sold you one cheaper than MSRP? Either way, good deal. I'd make a thumbs up emote, but I don't know how :p

Depends what you're talking about:

At UT2004 16X12 4X8X, 21% faster than a 9800XT, 36%slower than a X800Pro. (54>69>94fps)

At Far Cry 10x7 4X8X, 36% faster than a 9800XT, 14% slower than a X800Pro. Not too shabby for a $300 card, IMO. (32>51>58)
:)

Ooops- for BFG, Far Cry at 16X12 4X8X!

The 6800 is 7% faster than the 9800XT and 68% slower than the X800Pro, which is running at an ave fps of 29! (we all know you have to shoot for averages below 30fps to give your games that nice jerky, "silent movie" type animation!)

Do you have any of the MS HD WMV files? Maybe you could run a couple 720p and 1080p video's with WMP9 and report the PQ and dropped frames at full screen playback from the statistics view..perhaps?

I don't know what these are, but in the spirit of being helpful I'm writing myself a note to get them, and I'm currently DLing 3dMark03.

You can get them here:High Definition Content Showcase

If its possible, try both versions of the same file (720p 1080p) and especially the ones using DRM. I understand they are large downloads, so if you're on dialup..don't bother. They're all pretty good, but I really like "step into liquid"

Don't forget to try the different renderers :)

I agree with you I think most will have a decent one but not all...
So far, Leadtek is the first one to become available with a unique non-stock cooler. I wonder if it's better, worse, or just different...

Good to see the 6800 making it to the retail channel though, that Chaintech has been up and listed as in stock for a while on Newegg now. Of course it's overpriced.

I have read that the Nvidia reference design cooler is very efficient.

6800 is slightly better in some games, marginally better in other games, and a good deal better in the rest of the games. There are plenty of reviews out now. You should check some out.

6800 = 298.00

5950 = 367.00

So I think its a bit more than slightly better. New architechture with tons of new features as you already know.

Looks to me like its doing better than a 9800XT, which I believe is equivalent to an overclocked 9800pro but with twice the memory.

There is a link in this very thread.

Here.

And what of a solidly overclocked 6800?

Man I need to offload my 5900NU that runs at 450\900 and get a 6800GT hehehe

Thought I almost had my coworker buying it for 180 but he balked.

Well, Asus has a 256MB 6800 coming with a bunch of extras but knowing Asus it'll probably cost as much as the GT

Many people who overclock their pros can take them well beyond the 412/365 that the XT has. I got mine to 460 core.:D

We all know that the XT was a bad buy anyway. I know you say that Nvidia will get a solid 30% performance increase over the 9800 Pro, but I'm just not seeing it now, and buying a card based on future potential driver improvements is a bit silly IMO.

Buying a card based on unknown and variable OCing ability might be considered sillier yet?

I thought they were all 256mb??

6800U 256 1100MHZ GDDR3
6800GT 256 1000MHz GDDR3
6800 128MB 700MHz DDR1
With some of the whacked out stuff that we have seen come out in the last generation, I wouldn't be surprised to see a GeForce 6200 SE 512MB SDRAM with a side of fries (for 'Extreme Gaming' of course). I would however, be really surprised not to see a 6800 256MB.

Just played the first level of Painkiller, all on "High" in nVidia and game settings, 10X7 4X8X works perfect, looks awesome.
12X10 4X8X has slowdowns, not allowed in FPS game for me.

In any case, I had to play this game at 10X7 0X0X on my 5800U, and I'd say this still performs better.

You can beat me to the Ultra or GT, DaPunisher, then all will be right in the world again. ;)

Since when is 9800 Pro overclockability unknown? It might be variable, but it has been out for a year so surely people have a general idea on what they can expect.

That's hardly the only reason to buy a 9800 pro over a 6800 anyway. It's also $110 cheaper, or $80 if you want to count that Farcry game as a $30 gift.
