6800gto replace or memory

High i got a dell 8400 and trying to play source. My fps is all over the place, never can stay stable always like 40s. So i was wondering if i should get a 7800gtx or buy another gig of memory. I was also thinking of ing a ASUS P5ND2-SLI Deluxe Socket T (LGA 775) Nvidia nForce 4 SLI ATX Intel Motherboard along with a Thermaltake Tsunami VA3000BWA Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower Computer Case. And upgrade the video card later with duel 7800gt or one gtx. I pretty sure the memory and Processor will work with the motherboard.
I just need help what would be better for gaming in the long run.

does your frames being all over the place make a noticeable difference when playing? or was it from what you recorded with a program like FRAPS? Your system should be running any game out there well.
