6800GT worth buying for my system?

I want to upgrade my video card from a Ti4600 128mb to a 6800gt so I can play HL2. Here are my system specs and I was wondering if this system is too outdated to be able to use the new card.

p4 2.53 & 2.71 533FSB
MSI I845GE Max-L
80GB 7200rpm 8mb HD
2x 512 pc2700 pc333 memory
420watt PS

The mobo is only rated 4x AGP so that should be one problem to start but overall what should I expect and is it worth upgrading the video at all?

You'll enjoy a healthy increase in performance across the board, especially at higher resolutions and graphical settings. Your system is still pretty fast. Don't worry about the AGP4X vs 8X.

Your current setup would run the game according to a review in PCGAMER, but in a lower directx then 9. Basically it would work but look poor. With the 6800GT it should be 100% better.

Well i have a 2.8b and my cpu was a bottle neck fo rmy 6800GT. I oc my cpu and i got alot more performance oout my 6800GT

Get it id you want to run everything @12801024 or 1600x1200

Why? You are saying 19" monitors dont disaply 1280x1024 or higher?

My Viewsonic G90F does 88HZ at 1280x1024 and 75 for 1600x1200 or something like that and even though it's below 85 "minimal" comfort rate, I find that refresh rate only matters when you work on office work and look at white screen or read something on the computer. For gaming running at 60hz doesn't hurt my eyes. If my videocard was powerful enough, i'd run 1600x1200 because back in the days when it could games looked much better the higher the rez was.

This is a good article which compares going from 2.8P4 to A64 3800+
Highend CPU's vs High End Graphics cards

Basically, if you will play at 1600x1200 2AA/8AF or 1280x1024 4AA/8Af which 6800GT will handle or even if you play at 1600x1200, 2.71 you have is going to give you roughly same performance as the fastest CPU on the market since with higher quality settings the small increase of cpu speed highly justifies the cost of the upgrade, considering measly performance improvements. And how many ppl will play at 1024x768 and own a 6800GT?

go RUSSIAN go RUSSIAN, 😛 , a 6800gt would indeed be a nice addition to your rig. Crank up the AA, and AF, if your playing low resolutions then have some fun!
