ok my question: is it worth getting a 6800GT now and waiting till i can afford another one in like 3 months. Or is it better to get a 6600GT now and get a higher end next gen card when they come out with avalon/dx10 support. I don't play at res's higher than 1280x1024 4x aa.

was planning on getting the Leadtek 6800GT or the MSI 6600GT

If you don't play at anything higher than 1280x1024 than SLI is way overkill. There are probably only one or two games out right now that a single 6800GT would have a problem with at 1280x1024 and the eye-candy turned up. My 6800Gt would play FarCry pretty well at that res although it was oced to 400/1100. Most other games you play will play very smoothly with one 6800GT.

Get a cheap 6600GT or a cheap 6600 or a... I dunno. It all depends on the frames you can stand @ the resolution & image quality you play on and in the gaems you like

I'd just get a 6800GT now and hold on till SM4 cards show up next year. SLI sounds like a hassle, 128MB really isn't enough for high texture quality at 12x10 4xAA, the 6800GT can do 12x10 4xAA quite well now, and you're probably not hurting for money if you're willing to buy another GT in three months. And the single-card 6800GT will probably have a higher resale value than two 6600GTs.

I agree w/ the 6800GT if you want to run 12X10. My 6600GT would start wheezing pretty bad at that rez when you started turning the eyecandy on. Also, if you are on PCI-E ( assuming you are since asking about SLI ) you could also take a look at the ATI X800XL. Seems like a pretty good bang for the buck card that compares favorably to the 6800GT. Obviously they are not SLI-able, but last time I looked they were $50 or so cheaper.

Well if ATI makes good on their promises then even the XL will be able to run in AMR/MVP (ATI's SLI). Of course this may not work on nVidia boards so my point may be moot unless you don't mind upgrading your motherboard in the future.
