6800GT SLI or 7800GTX?

I see everybody say don't bother with SLI unless going with dual 7800GT/X's. They say 2x 6800GT's is a waste of money. Well from the benchmarks I have seen the the two 6800GTs seem to be better. Look at this review in particular.

Am I missing something here?

Its BARELY any better in games that take full advantage of it... and games that dont, well...

Based on that review I would say you are not missing anything. I have a new SLI machine with 2 BFG's 7800 GTX's and I have gotten some rather angry responses about having such. I don't know why SLI invokes such a response here in these forums and elsewhere but my rig runs like a scalded cat. Wonderful gaming experence and great fun to build.

1x 7800 GTX may get outperformaed by 2x 6800 GT in games like Far Cry and Doom 3, but in new games liek FEAR and BF2 the 7800 GTX beats 2x 6800 GT across the board.

Exactly!

People don't seem to realise running two 7800GTXs does not mean you have redundant power - case in point: with 16x AA/AF at 1280x1024 with everything maxxed, I get ~5fps. Now somebody tell me there is no point to SLI.

The fact is you can run games with so much cranked up than you could with a single card. It also provides that extra buffer of processing which means even in the heaviest fire fights your card never slows down or jerks in the slighest - silky smooth 100% of the time.

Is it a good proposition in terms of value? Hell no. But since when was even a single 7800GTX been a good value proposition anyway? Since when has anything high-end been good value?

The point is, at the end of the day, having a second 7800GTX SLI tangibly and undeniably improves the gaming experience. Period.

You are incorrect. The 6800GT SLI beat the 7800GTX (barely, not noticeable difference) in the article he linked to.

Anyway, we just had this discussion at length in another thread, search button?

What it came down to is everyone pretty much agrees the 7800GTX is better to have because it offers mostly comparable performance and new features like TAA, second rev Pure Video, and better performance above 16X12.

The 6800GT SLI did offer significantly higher perfromance at some games at 16X12.
