6800GT running very slowly

1)putting V-sync on dropped me to 47.7fps, a 7fps drop, is this normal?
Yes. Vsync should be off for benchmarking and on for playing (unless you don't mind/notice the image tearing)

2) Is AA or AF CPU dependent?
No, both are GPU dependant.

Should I bother w/ them?
Absofvckinglutey. You've got the video muscle in that 6800GT to push them, so slap on 2xAA and 8xAF (already enabled via "High Quality" mode) and ogle the purty surroundings with a healthy framerate. 🙂

look man i wasnt tryign to be a dick mearly let you know your system is fine...
like i said how does the game feel IN THE GAME.. not in the time demo..
does it run at a a good resolution and does it "feel" smooth..

my CPU with vsynch on, shadows on, 4x AA and 4xAF everything set to high at 16x12 did 40.3fps..
turn all that crap off and it pulls 92s all day long..
and im not overclocked.. but i dont care how it looks in demo mode.. it plays fine never stutters and thats all that matters to me..
30fps is more than enough for play.. with everything turned on.. i prefer more real world results rather than a time demo as that 92 means nothing to me since i dont play on low with all that stuff off.. I frankly dont see the point.. why wouldnt they run the time demo the way you play the game... with all the pretty stuff on... since thats the mode that matters.

ParkBench, did you happen to try disabling sound? If not, give it a try. If the game plays smoothly, then your sound card/drivers is the culprit. Install latest drivers for your soundcard whether its onboard or a PCI card.

Well why dont you just OC both your CPU and RAM. Im suprised no one has suggested that. The 2500+ and 2700 RAM are screaming, "OC ME!!!"

Im running at 2100mhz (Origianl speed 1.87GHZ). Not sure what memory you are using but just put the voltage at around 2.8 and put the memory at 400. That way both CPU and Memory at a 200x2. You will notice the difference.

Then again im not 100% positive on how high the Rev 1 Asus board allows OCs. Should allow OC to 400 but not native 400FSB support.

Ok, some quick things that had a direct effect on my score:

Firstly DO NOT force refresh rates in the nvidia control panel. Make sure they are set to application controlled. Doing this netted me a 10fps gain, before that I got either 90fps or 77fps and it was driving me MAD as to why there was so much fluctuation! Secondly, make sure that AA and AF in the nvidia control panel is set to application preference. Run the benchmark 3 times and let me know how it goes.

I think the originator of this thread should say a thank you to most of the replies. He went from 33fps to 55fps. 55 is probably all he is gonna get. The cpu is what is limiting you. I have a 2600 mobile barton at 2.5ghz(3400+ area) and I am limited to 63fps at 12x10. Thing is, I get 65fps at 6x4, 8x6, 10x7, and 11x8.

-CVSin, people need to benchmark to get the most out of their system. Lemme give u an example. Doom3 has these little spider guys that crawl out of holes and jump out at you... when 4 of these are onscreen simultaneously it crushes the framerate and aiming is difficult. After all these suggestions, and some of my own research and work, I am now able to fight these critters and not get a slideshow.. vital for survival in Doom when health is scarce!

-GamingPhreek thanks for the suggestion to OC but even if I know that OC'ing is safe with my hardware, there's still that part of my brain that says I might ruin or shorten the life of my hardware and my brain can't cope with that notion. It may run well for a week or month, but who knows what's going to happen longterm. Great suggestion, but not for me!

-I have the newest motherboard/sound drivers so there's no limit there. Soundstorm is doing what it should.

-Refreshes are set to application control as are AA and AF settings.

-MercenaryForHire, thank you for the AA/AF suggestions and information! I'm now running w/ 4x AA and 8x AF w/ no performance hit and it looks mahvelous!

-I can't stress what a difference Reg Seeker registry cleaner and Diskkeeper Pro made in my load times and texture thrashing; even AFTER using Windows Defrag. I mean, I knew Windows defrag was not as good, but it's literally unbelievable.

-Balex99, Nearly all my posts in this thread include thank yous, mom raised a good boy. But if you notice about 15fps came from precaching, not the suggestions!

Guys, with HQ mode, unzipped pk4 files, cacheMegs set to 128 in autoexec.cfg, 1024x768, self-shadow on, 4xAA and 8xAF, v-sync off, I now get 51-52 fps in a precached timedemo 1 AND it's very playable and beautiful as I make my way thru the end of the game!
