You absolutely need to clean off the old thermal paste and apply fresh stuff every time you remove the card and reseat it. Arctic Silver 5 is the most popular brand but, others will do. Ceramique is fine too.

Sounds like someone misrepresented that card. Since you stated it has a picture of a mermaid on the heatsink then it's probably a EVGA card. The guy who sold it to you had a decent overclock applied to it too.

Here's something else to try. I find the nVidia temp monitor to give false temps and don't really trust it. I use freeware called Everest to monitor my CPU and VGA temps. Everest gives me a reading that's around 10 degrees celsius lower than the nVidia monitor.

just got my vid vard back. BFG has great service. sent it in monday and got it back wed. anyways, probelm fixed. they sent me a new card with the updated copper heat sink and blue leds. idles at 45c. after running atitool artifact scanner for 5 min, i get to 69C. is that good? also, would i need to reinstall all the drivers? its the same card. so, not too sure.
