6800GT possible problem - updated

Hey guys,

I know that 3DMark is a joke, but I wanted to see what difference I was receiving by upgrading to my new Gainward 6800GT G.S. I was getting about 18,500 with my old 9800 Pro and now with the new G.S. card I am only getting 17,700. From reading on the net, it seems that my score is pretty low. I did a fresh install of Windows XP with SP2. I installed all of the drivers, updates, etc from the various websites so that I would have the LATEST drivers. I then installed 3D Mark 2001SE. I left all the default values in 3D Mark. I hope you guys can shead some light into my problem. Specs are as follows:

P4 3.0C
Abit IC7-G Max II
1GB Corsair 3200 XMS
Gainward 6800GT Golden Sample
W.D. Raptors in a RAID 0
Antec True Power 550

You should of Benched that 9800 Pro in 3Dmark2003 you would of got around 5,500 and with your new 6800GT you will get 10,000...

You cant bench test a new videocard with old games and old benchmarking software as the benefits of the new cores only show in new games and game engines.

If you a 3DMark Fan Download 3Dmark2004 in a few weeks and check the ORB so u can see what people with 9800 Pro's are getting. Comparied to your 6800GT.

Still - that's pretty low...

Have you installed the motherboard AGP chipset drivers???
(not the bios, not the official detonator drivers. the other for you motherboard....)

The performance drop would be something like that in that case...

There are not any AGP drivers for my motherboard. I installed the chipset inf drivers, but that is the only option that I have. Could a bad RAM stick be the cause? I dont think I do, but it wouldnt suprise me.

3D Mark 01 is a system benchmark, not only the graphics card.
While it's a little lower, it's not really that bad.

Have you tried any games and noticed a difference?
Have you made sure no setting (like AA/AF) are on in the nVidia control panel?

And videoclone, please be quiet.
A new (faster) card, with old software, SHOULD be FASTER. You will notice the difference. We get 400+fps in Quake 3 now, when it was released, people could barely get 100fps.
That's an old game, new cores still show benefits.

Also, the change to SP2 (f you didn't have it installed previously), may have affected the score, and any optimisations you had before (such as turning services off), will not still be there, so Win XP may be hogging resources.
As another note, I went from a Ti4400 to a 9800Pro and went from ~10.5k to ~12k, not a huge jump, because the rest of my system was holding me back a bit (but that probably won't be the case for you)
Did you have SP2 installed when you had your 9800 installed?

3d mark score do seem to be goin backward for alot of ppl....its old hat now so its gettin less an less relavent, hopefully tho 3dmark 05 will be like 01....a test of ur whole system as a gaming rig

I did not have SP2 installed on my previous benchmark. I havent benchmarked any games yet as I had to leave to come to an IT conference. I am curious if it is my RAM. I had to up the voltage to keep it stable...so I am wondering if it is crapping out on me.

This is very possibly a problem with the temperature diode. if it is going crazy and reading really high temps then it could be running in low power mode. This sounds like the problem

NO - the thing is that my 6800 was slower than my 9800 pro in 3dmark 01 as well. Don't sweat it. Games all run faster - 3dmark03 will be much faster as well. Just some kind of quirk - all though I got pretty pissed when my $100 video card update got a lower score I am running far cry at 1600*1200 4xAA very high detail with "quality" checked in the video drivers - my 9800 Pro certainly couldn't do that!

I just reloaded XP SP1 and SP2 and there was no difference in performance between the two. I got around 18000 in both for 3DMock 2K1. After moving back to SP2, I ran 3DMock 2K3 and received 11100 marks. I never ran 2K3 with my 9800 Pro so is that an acceptable score? It is about 3AM right now and I am tired of installing and reinstalling so I am going to bed. I will check back in with you all in the morning. Thanks for everyones help and support. Oh yeah, my temps are idling about 53C and spiking to 70C so that seems ok.
